Does the SST prevent it from happening? Can you actually be close to redline in 4th and downshift to 2nd, over rev, money shift and bend things up in the engine. Curious if I were to get a X MR or SE with SST and if the wife were to drive. If it doesn't prevent an over-rev than she only gets to drive in auto mode. But if SST prevents an over-rev by not allowing one to shift like that then she could drive in all modes without worries. Same if I were to let a friend drive the car, which I usually don't . just in case

If you try to shift into a gear too high or too low, it will beep and complain. So it will not let you over-rev your engine.

Now how will you keep her from hitting the curb or rashing the wheels?
We (married types) would love to know that! [rolls eyes]

Don't let her drive it. Period. End of story. If woman can't drive woman no drive. Woman belong in kitchen

haha, I actually tried to teach her a manual back in my 07 nonturbo impreza. She did well on day 1 and was able to drive in the parking lot in 1st and 2nd, which I think is hardest. i.e. stop and go in 1st and 2nd gear. But a few weeks later she stalled at a light and panicked. Manual is one of those things where you have to drive it everyday for like a month straight to be very comfortable and have it be 2nd nature.

with the SST, I could slowly transition her into understanding the tach more and shifting when needed. then maybe the transition to a true manual will be easier.

My problem is that the wife drives a Civc SIR and Genesis 6-speed all week and when she gets in the MR with SST shes confused to all hell. I prefer coming to a complete stop at stop signs and let the tranny shift slowly into 1st. wait a second and then get going again. Trying to get her to adapt my preferred driving habbits for a SST tranny is hard.

For those who haven't driven an SST it does take some learning. Once you understand how the transmission operates, especially the downshift to 2nd, more so 1st, you'll know when to give it throttle as opposed to just coasting and letting it think. Giving the car throttle when the transmission doesn't expect it results in louder than usual clunking noises. I prefer to switch into manual / user-controlled shifting when in heavy traffic. IMO riding out first to 4,000 is better than letting it jerk back and forth between 1st and 2nd.

My car has never prevented me from accidentally downshifting. I have a 2010 SE...have been driving manual cars for 7-8 years and then got this beast needless to say, somehow my brain sends signals to my left hand w/o recourse. consequently, I have been accelerating in 4th and shifted to 3rd (d'oh)- I have done this twice, and on both occasions the vehicle had no problem abiding to my request- luckily the rev limiter/ quick actions on my part prevented anything else happening, but to my knowledge, it will let you down shift when you should be shifting up.

both times, I couldnt shake the awful feeling for at least a half hour- wondering how I could make such a rookie error- but when you are using a new way to shift, mistakes are bound to happen- I am hoping to avoid another "mis shift"

Also agree on keeping it in manual when in traffic. much better to ride out the gear than have the car constantly clunk between 1st and 2nd.

ohh, the perils of the SST

Sole reason I bought Rotas. *When* curb rash happens. I get really really upset, for about an hour, then I'm over it.

I don't get the logic. Why would she push the car to red line? If so, she should up shift instead of down shift to low the rpm. Is she always driving rudely like that?
I cant imagine how a person could ruin a auto-transmission~

I am guessing that when you downshifted it was still okay to do so, but because you were accelerating you quickly hit the rev limiter. I have down shifted also when I meant to up shift or even when I meant to change the radio station (no really) and will do it as long as it will not hit the rev limiter at that point.

yeah come to think of it, the first time I did it, the shock of such a F up consumed me and I didnt even know what happened...but I do remember that the rpm's did not go past redline...so I guess while such a shift should never be made, if it CAN be made while falling with-in the rev limits, the car will do so...it will just feel and sound like complete CRAP. lol...I am so careful now...you have to be totally mindful with those paddle shifters at all times. they are sneaky.

why not have her practice on a CVT or DSG first? I would imagine the DSG being the cloest to the SST style.. but form my understanding, the SST is a very safe tranny

You can over-rev the engine from too much power and torque though. Over a certain level the car has a hard time making upshifts on time and will bang off the limiter a lot.

yeah, I have noticed this too...sometimes have to initiate the shift at around 5.5 or 6k to get the best result (stock). Most of the time the SST shifts are fast and precise, so not complaining. Just weird to have this after driving a stick so many years. had a jeep and F150 inbetween, but there was no sport shifting those...lol

heres to the EVO and learning new ways to drive
