Thinking of getting 2012 EvoX
Thinking of getting 2012 EvoX
Hey guys,
It has been many years since I have posted here and have been out of the Evo world. I am thinking of getting a new GSR and since I have not been following up with the new Evos there is alot I don't know about them. I used to have 06 GSR and loved the car. I want to know how the new one compares to the IX. What are the common issues with the new ones? Overall any information that will help me make my decision would be great. I am going to daily drive the Evo and am going to take it to the track (Willow Springs) few times a year.
I also have looked at the MR and do not like the auto tranny. Since the MR is the higher model would it work better on a roadcorse? Is the MR really worth the extra $$?
Thank you.
Karn

I will be signing my paperwork on tuesday for my new 2012 EVO GSR. I'll be honest; I've been looking up both the MR and GSR for a little while... The biggest different is the transmission, suspension, wheels and some aero differences between the two. I went with the GSR because I like the "feel" of a manual car. I've seen some issues with overheating the SST transmission when competing road course with mods. Best thing there to do is upgrade the trans cooler and some of the issues do go away, but is recommended to keep an eye on the temperature of it. Down side of the GSR is that it is 5 spd, rather than a 6 spd like the MR which would become a big difference at cruising speeds.
Best thing to say is look at the 2 models and figure what you want out of the car.

Bought my GSR a few weeks back as well.
I test drove the MR, and it was nice, but it just didnt have the true sporty feel I wanted. Sure the cruising rpm'is are a little on the high side, but the car doesn't feel that bad with cruise control.
I didnt get a 2012 only because of the rebate mitsubishi was giving out on the 2011's. It pretty much covered the leather and sunroof package I wanted.

Everyone keeps mentioning having the 6th gear in the MR is hella good for cruising. At 70mph I'm sitting at over 3k RPMs... I'm sure the 5speed is the same. Therefore top gear revs are equal and no benefit in cruising. This remains true with the subarus when comparing wrx 5 speed and the STi 6 speed. The six speed has more get up and go and is better suited for tracks and coming out of a really tight or slow turn in second gear instead of having to downshift to first to get in your powerband. 2nd gear in these 6speeds are in the powerband at 25mph.
Please correct me if I'm wrong on the 5speed cruising revs.

I was going back and forth between the GSR and MR for a few months, but I've decided on the GSR simply because it's manual. I know I'll get tired of the paddle shifters in the MR, it doesn't seem as fun, and the MR kinda feels like a video game to me. That's basically the only main difference in the GSR and MR, like most people have said.
E: I wish they still made a manual MR.

The S-AWC is a nice difference with the other driving system advances. You an pretty much floor it through a turn. It takes pretty much the same to mods as the IX did. You just have the different all aluminum 4B11 versus the cast iron 4G63. The IX was more fun stock for stock, but the X has grown on me a lot.
the X does fine with bolt ons. They're completely reliable up to about to 400 WHP range.
As far as MR vs. GSR, the MR isn't the "higher" trim level. It's an automatic, and like any automatic, it costs more. The ONLY thing you can't get in the GSR that you can get in the MR (beside the tranny) is the Touring Package.
