What triggers you to change your oil?

With the summer season and the driving season coming for road trips, I've been wondering if any of that has an effect on when you change your oil?

For me, I only change my oil based on the mileage/months interval based on the owner's manual. Only exception for me is I always change my oil after a day at the track.

How about you?

I generally change my oil every 4-5k miles which is always sooner than the time interval, but my exceptions are if I'm going in for a dyno retune with oil older than 3k miles, or I'm going on a long roadtrip that would put me beyond 5k miles.

3,000 miles, I keep track using an iPhone app that also tracks my gas mileage.
If I am going on a road trip and the trip will exceed the 3,000 miles, then I will change it before I leave.

I don't change it based on the weather.

I like to do it every 3-5k miles. 5k is stretching it with me.

I think the changing with the weather mentality is from the past when manufacturers recommended different weight oils depending on the ambient temp.

Agree. I still hear some folks saying they change their oil in the spring and fall to get ready for the seasons...and I'm like

Here's what I do to prepare my car for Texas winters:
Fall - put leather gloves in door pocket
Spring - remove said gloves from door pocket

The only time I might change early is in the fall before winter. Because I dont have a garage, and laying on the cold cement sucks. So i can at least cut it down to one change for the cold months.
