Engine Oil Capacity

Service manual says 5.9qts.
DIY on here says 5qts.

I'm getting ready to do an oil change. How much oil do I need?

u never drain out the full amount cuz some oil is stuck on the heads, oil pump, strainer etc.

Put in 5qts.
Put the cap on, and start your car.
Let it idle for a few minutes to assure it's not cold.
--Recheck your oil level on your dipstick.

You really should be fine, but never hurts to double check.

My car generally takes 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 quarts with a new filter. I've seen a lot of people just dump in 5 qts and more often than not its at least slightly overfilled.

Yeah Kracka has a point too, depending on how you drain the car (front end up on jack stands, or whole car on a 4post lift) it doesn't hurt to do a fill on any car about -.25 to -.5 qts, and then follow the process of idle and then top off.

The shop I worked at we used to get a really good at know of specific models that would be off from what the manual said, but we always did the idle and recheck.

Also, any time you use a different brand of filter, is when you want to be sure to do a recheck. The filter capacity might be listed as the same, but generally can have some variance.

The 5.9 quarts included the oil cooler. That won't drain with just an oil change.

If you autoX doesnt it help to have extra oil so it has oil squirting at all times, even in hard turns?

You don't want to overfill these cars - just fill it to the full line.

No- The stock pan and pickup does a good job to prevent starvation. Truth is an AutoX will never generate enough G force to cause the oil to shift in the pan to starve the car. Road Racing could, possibly, but only in very fast, long sweepers. Think Lime Rock's downhill right or maybe the bowl at NJMP Lightning, but likely both of those have enough camber to prevent starvation.

We run a Moroso racing wingate oil pan and Accumulator system with 7.5 qts of oil. The Accumulator is under pressure to handle oil imbalances but I suspect it doesn't get unloaded often.

Don't overfill though.
