Evo X in 2 years
Oh and I totally understand speccing out early and waiting.
I pretty much read every single thread on this site the whole year I was in Kuwait saving for money to buy my X. Comparing reviews, prices, specs, opinions etc.
And that wasn't even my first Evo.
When I came back to the states after a year in the middle easet I paid cash, and then threw $10,000 worth of mods into it at 300miles on the odometer.

Wrong. I have a family and just went shopping this morning at Wal-Mart. Spent $160 on groceries and everything fit fine in the trunk. I suppose if you had 10 kids, then maybe you might need more trunk space, but the trunk is fine for most grocery shopping.
Hello Everyone!
I am in my last year of college and God willing will be working at a sheriff or PD this time next year. I was hoping to buy a car 2 years from now and an Evo X is at the top of my list. Joined the forum to amass as much knowledge as possible over the next few years so I go into this purchase well informed. Now I know zero people who own an Evo so I'm completely new here.
How is the evo X as a DD? I've heard horror stories about the gas mileage and mixed reviews on reliability. Anyone care to shed some light here?

The Evo isn't as bad as a DD as some people make it out to be. Gas mileage is what you make it, though don't expect to do better than 26 mpg highway. That's not to say that you can't exceed it, but it's not going to happen often. Most people will average somewhere between 19-21 mpg overall (city and driving mixed).
I see you're in SoCal, so what law enforcement agencies are you planning on applying to? I applied to several a few years ago so I'm pretty familiar with the process and a lot of the agencies.

I have to say that if you drive average of 55-60 and aren't "driving it like you stole it," you can get upwards of 27 MPG. This is proof! It actually reached 27MPG, but wasn't able to snap a picture. It's all in how you drive. We also have a 12 Ralliart and that car gets average of 20-22 MPG, but I am a driver with a heavy foot. Maintenance on the car is def more expensive because it's recommended only synthetic fluids be put in the car. An average oil change is about $80 a pop at a dealership. Just keep in mind it's a turbo charged car and AWD. AWD will cause your tires to wear more quickly generally, which is why I negotiated fee replacement tires for the life of the vehicle when I purchased it new from the dealer. We both use the Evo X and Ralliart as DD. I drive about 50 miles per day and he takes his about 70-80 miles a day. We find we get about 220-260 miles per tank average. A tough competitor for us was the STi, but the Evo has all forged internals and will hold up longer. They also have bolt-ons that will add about 100 HP for about $1k whereas the STi does not come that cheap. If you are wanting a performance car, the Evo wins hands down. Keep an eye out though because word is they aren't making another Evo until 2014 where it will be remade as a turbo hybrid... Should be an interesting combo to say the least!
I would see 19.28 mpg averaged over ~500gallons of fuel through the car
That's what seems to be the general consensus. Some people have said that because when the car is idling it doesn't calculate mpg (which would be zero), so it doesn't take into account the gas being used in that situation. Calcuating miles driven against fuel used or put in is pretty much the best way to go.
IMO the Evo X gets great miliage concidering the capability of the car. The cost and maintenance is a lil more costly, but you will realize its worth evey penny when you put your foot down and the smile it puts on your face. I use mine as a DD and never had any issues or complaints.

Just for fun, check out what it says when you only do stop and go driving and no jaunts on the freeway. It can be very depressing. I would definitely say that the Evo X is definitely not a city car when it comes to fuel economy. And, I think that gauge is misleading. Yes, it will show fuel mileage at that particular moment, but I don't believe that it is telling you that you are getting that mileage overall for the gas that you have used in the tank.

Keep in mind they only have a 14 gallon tank, so range is not very good - my 2007 avalanche has almost double the range if I'm doing highway driving, but that has almost a 30 gallon tank and gets ~19mpg hwy. Plus with mods comes more fuel demands and less mileage.
Not an ecomonical DD, but a good compromise DD / fun car IMO.

TIRES AND CLUTCH.... IMO, those are the two things that burned the biggest holes in my pocket vs. other performance cars.
Your tires, which you'll be buying 4 at a time (always), won't last you more than 15k miles.
Clutch has been known to go out as low as 11k miles but some baby it 'til 30k..
both are expensive as hell.
BUT, these numbers are coming from a community that races, and if you race a car, what would you expect.... why else would you buy the evo?

That's true, but why not start planning now
?Yes the Evo is pretty reliable.. if you do the maintenance correctly, and on time- or maybe even ahead of time.
As far as gas mileage goes.. if you drive easy, you can get around 20mpgs up to 25ish.
Maintenance is expensive, but when you compare it to other performance cars, its not too bad. There aren't a whole lot of parts that are required to be replaced honestly. The fuel pump relay needs to be replaced. Alot of people are afraid of the timing chain but most NEVER have problems. The transmission in the GSR is a bit "notchy" but if you get a short shifter, shift knob and replace the tranny fluid it helps alot. Just search and you will see all the "complaints" on here. Just remember though, a forum like this is where everyone vents/complains about any issues. Just because one or two people have a problem doesn't mean that's the norm..

Everyone has attested to how painful the fuel economy is for a DD. Let me share some numbers with you, not deterring you from going with the Evo, as people have said it's a great car. I love mine.
I would consider myself pretty average for using my Evo for DD use. I commute ~50ish miles RT 4-5x per week, plus at least travelling around town on my weekends. My commute is ~6miles city and 19miles highway with traffic.
In 10months 29days of ownership I have spent $3,140 in fuel. Here's my averages:

It's a great daily driver. If you are not flooring it everywhere gas mileage is pretty decent. Just start a maintenance fund and you should be fine.
I can't imagine waiting 2 years! But at least you are not jumping into something when your not prepared!
From 12/2011 to 7/2012 I have averaged 18.8 mpg and spent 1135.00 in gas that is mostly daily driving with a few trips.

My mini cooper S (supercharged 2006 model) and my Mazdaspeed3 both averaged 20MPG real world.
However, each could do 32MPG highway cruising cross country if I REALLY tried. hypermiling like I meant it!
The Evo X averages about 20MPG too. Better if you get a tune to lean it out.
Even if you spend $500 more a year on gas opposed to say a 25MPG car, I'm sure you can justify $500/year for OMGAWESOMEENESS every one of those 365 days.
As for maint, I haven't owned my X long enough to tell you about reliability, other than what I read on forums. But my VIII just needed 1 new clutch (I 4,000RPM launched it pretty much every single green light I hit. Yes I was young and dumb) tires, brake pads, and Mobile 1 oil the whole 5 years I owned it.
Mobile 1 is no joke. Rolling out of Jiffy Lube just having spent $100 every 5,000 miles (yes the VIII recommended 5,000 not 3,000) hurt, but in the end wasn't really that much more than your average dinosaur lube for $60.
Was a lot more than my Pontiac Sunfire cost in maint, so I wasn't used to it, and that may be the people you hear from most when people say maint costs are high. First time performance car owners.

I don't plan on holding back with this car, I want to enjoy a car like this while I still can and plan on getting every ounce of fun out of it I can.
I applied to LA and Riverside Sheriff as well as LAPD and San Diego PD. Planning to apply to Riverside PD if they open up and then San Diego Sheriff in a month when they open up. Hoping to work at LA Sheriff if possible. Jail time isn't gonna be the most fun, but there's just so much to do in that County
A friend of mine from high school who I ran into when applying for Ventura County Probation a few years back said that he was with the VCSD and had left since he had been at the jails for a lot longer than he had anticipated while having been expected to stay there even longer. He said he'd rather have just gone to CDCR and been making the extra dough for doing similar things (jails vs. prisons) during those three years.
Also, when I was doing the medical examinations for CDCR, I was talking to a guy who had been with the LASD for 20 years but was also applying, and he said that if he could do it all over again, he'd have chosen CDCR right away.
But personally, I was going for CHP the most.
