You may also want to consider CDCR, as a lot of people who I know who work there are actually pretty happy, as it's not as bad as some would think. If you go for the Sheriff's Department, you're going to be in the jails for a while, except if you go CDCR, you're already making up to $10,000 more annually than most other departments. While the Sheriff's Departments are only supposed to put you in the jails for a year or two, a lot of people who have done it more recently have ended up there for a longer period of time.

A friend of mine from high school who I ran into when applying for Ventura County Probation a few years back said that he was with the VCSD and had left since he had been at the jails for a lot longer than he had anticipated while having been expected to stay there even longer. He said he'd rather have just gone to CDCR and been making the extra dough for doing similar things (jails vs. prisons) during those three years.

Also, when I was doing the medical examinations for CDCR, I was talking to a guy who had been with the LASD for 20 years but was also applying, and he said that if he could do it all over again, he'd have chosen CDCR right away.

But personally, I was going for CHP the most.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. Recently something snapped in my head and now I'm crazy about the Evo X. So I'm planning on saving up for an Evo for the next year... or two. Keep an eye out though because word is they aren't making another Evo until 2014 where it will be remade as a turbo hybrid... Should be an interesting combo to say the least!
