Audi TT RS owner, thinking about switching to an Evo X
Also funny, I remember the Quattro being the most dominate rally car for nearly a decade. Obviously it wasn't the same decade the Impreza, Evo or slew of Cosworth Fords running, but I doubt this topic was about selecting his next full-time rally car, that can slide for whatever reason.
LOOL my comment is long gone haha.
OK SO DOWN TO BUSINESS!
I think everyone really hit the mark with this. When you get an Evo you WILL get the performance you're looking for. Add a few bolt on's and a tune you'ed be surprised how far it would take you. So you're cover in that aspect.
The ONLY this you need to worry about is the interior. Generally it's not bad and if you get the SS and all the goodies it's really not bad but you have to keep in mind that the Audi's interior is always been something awesome.
So if you're not gonna die with out a super amazing interior them I promise once you take it for a drive you'll be set on it. At least I was :/ just my .02
Hope you find the right car man and I hope you love the decision you make. Just remember do your research and take your time. You'll find what you're looking for.

The TT's Haldex is not the same as the Quattro you get in the S4, S5 etc. It's much closer to the system available in the Golf R, front wheels driven under normal conditions and RWD on demand when the fronts start struggling. That said, it doesn't have seem to hurt the lap times I've seen for the RS (Best Motoring, C&D Lightning lap).
Performance wise as many have said is going to be a toss up depending on if you want to modify either car. I'd probably put my money on the TT-RS 5 cyl however if you want to compare apples to apples / mods to mods - just more motor to work with. However, a lightly tuned Evo definitely could match the performance of the stock TT-RS
The current STI *still* has engine problems. I'd wait for the next generation motor personally than risk it. Ringlands, cylinder 4 - stock or tuned, it still seems to be a problem. Such a shame though, because I really do like that car otherwise.
Low mile IX MRs are still out there. I got mine last year at 45k. Worth it to me, the IX and X have distinctly different personalities, depends on what you like more.

Review of the Audi TT-RS?
The 2013 TT-RS is the top pick on my list.
Would you mind sharing more opinions about the car? Pros? Cons? Likes? Dislikes? Reliability? Quality?
One minor thing I noticed - the Audi radio is the previous generation Audi unit and I'm a little disappointed to hear that its iphone support (Spotify, Pandora) may be limited without third-party audio dongles.
I'm also concerned about noise-levels. I've seen that mentioned negatively in several reviews of the TT-RS (loud, and annoying over long distances). Did you have the sport exhaust package?
Thanks!
bsmack - I'm about to head in the opposite direction. I have a 2008 EVO X GSR. The car has been a blast, but I'm a frequent car-flipper...and I've had it over 3.5 years and I'm ready to try something different.

i was all for the OP to get an X until i saw the pic of the interior on the RS, omg...
2005 wrx
Note - I did have the previous generation 2005 WRX, not the current gen.
But here's the high-level notes...
I had fond memories of the WRX - and nothing really negative to say about Subaru. It was a very trouble-free car that held its value well.
On a side note - I just put a deposit down for my 2013 TT-RS! It's a 3-4 month wait while they build it.
But here's the high-level notes...
- Great Build Quality
- Rattle Free interior
- Better Shifter (I had the Subaru Short-shift package)
- Exhaust Sounded fantastic (...like a baby-Porsche)
- Stock power was good for its time. Cobb Stage 1 made it great bang-for-the-buck
- Subaru dealerships are everywhere around me
- Handling was better than the BMW, MR2s, and G35 Coupe I've owned.
- Really solid AWD

Here's what I did to combat that:
I went through and dynamated or sound deaded the entire car including door panel and inside of doors. I replaced weak clips with screws. I used strip caulk, rivets for seams. I redid the entire stereo, went with a quieter exhaust (I've had 3 on this car alone LOL). I made real carbon fiber for my dash, seat rails, doors, pillars, rear pillars, and I'm about to make some for the center console. I just relocated the AC controls down by the cubby hole, and put three gauges in the AC bezel area. I also pulled the rear seat and put down a full layer of sound deadener under the seat, and some of the biggest road noise comes from a crevice that runs under the back seat by the fuel pump housing directly under the car. It's just a big open hole, presumably for fuel spillage or something, I don't know. Anyways, I filled most of that up, huge difference.

Right now I currently drive a 2012 Audi TT-RS. I am at a point where if I sold the car nowish I would be able to pay off my loan and maybe make some money. With interest rates at an all time low my plan is to save as much cash as possible for a house and get a more "conservative" car. I've always been a fan of evo's and from what I'm reading they seem to be the best bet for what I want. My questions:
-Is the MPG really that terrible? I average about 26-27 mpg with minimal hooning mixed in and get roughly 280-320 miles per fill up. Is it true with the evo I'll be at the gas station more often? How big is the tank?
My stock MR gets on avg 18mpg and I get 200 miles per tank. In my wrx I got 24mpg and 315 miles per tank. The tank is something like 12 gal, you could have found that out with a search.
-Will a stage 2 evo x be comparable to what I'm driving now in terms of 0-60 time (4.1 sec)? From the research I've done the answer seems to be yes. Is there a general consensus on who makes the best stuff? Best bang for buck?
You could have found that with a search, as you did.
-How bad is the cabin noise at 75-80 mph? My main concern with the evo is that it only has 5 gears (don't want an MR). The TT-RS has pretty bad drone at 60 mph but if you go up to 80 mph it's pretty quiet.
Cabin noise in mine, with summer tires, is HORRIBLE. Its worse than both my WRX's, focus and neon were.
-Should I consider an STI? They seem less reliable from what I've read briefly and also more expensive to mod. What is their redeeming factor? Are they more comfortable/DD'able?
First off you information is wrong. The STI is cheaper to mod but you get less bang for your buck. So parts are cheaper but they dont return the same on the investment. Its a wash.
Subarus are very very reliable. There was an issue with the 08-09 ringlands but that was when you were pushing power above stock levels. At stock levels they will be far more reliable than any evo any day.
They are more comfortable DD but by very little. I will say that the trunk and seat pass-through/lay down is where the evo failed the practical area.
Do you expect evo owners, besides me, to suggest you get a subaru
come on dude.
Thanks for any help! I've always been a fan of evo's and probably should've just gotten one from the start if I'm being honest.

DONT BUY ANYTHING NOW... WAIT a YEAR. LET SEE WHAT SUBARU and MITSU comes with NEX...wanna buy an evo that is 6 years OLD same model???? dont do it... subaru is coming with new engine... just WAIT....
Maybe? Maybe not?
But cars aren't always as clearcut.
- lots of EVO IX owners prefer them over EVO X
- I know current BMW M3 and Audi RS4 owners who don't want the newer six cylinder engines - they like their 8-cylinder engines.
- I used to own two Toyota MR2s - LOVED those cars. Hated the "new" replacement the Toyota MR-S.
- I used to own a 1999 BMW 3-series (E46 body-style) - hated the replacement 2006 3-series E90 body-style. (too conservative)
- Based on reviews I've read, the auto-journalists hate the current generation Honda civic , they universally prefer the previous gen Civic.
- I used to own a 2005 Subaru WRX - great car. But there were probably people that passed on the excellent 2007 WRX and bought the "new" and redesigned 2008 WRX. The 2008 was garbage and Subaru had to quickly re-design the re-design and issue a "new-new" 2009 model with more respectable performance. I'd be pissed if I bought a "new" watered-down 2008 model.
That's just six examples off the top of my head where Newer isn't always better...it's just newer
Maybe the new EVO will be DSG only with no manual model? Maybe the new EVO will be hybrid? Maybe the new EVO will be heavier? Or maybe there won't be a new EVO at all?
Plus when its a first-year model, the prices will be marked-up. Whereas the outgoing model is the latest incarnation of that generation with all the kinks worked out, all service bulletins applied with the latest programming and generous discounts.
