Accessory Belt Failure
Accessory Belt Failure
Has anyone experienced premature belt failure, when the belt was replaced at 60-70,000 miles. The belt which drives the alternator, water pump and power steering pump. I replaced the belt and it failed, (blew apart) in about 9 days after about 400 miles of use. It was an authentic Mitzubishi part.
Just wondering if anyone else can share their experience, both good and bad results. If anyone else had a similar outcome to mine, I am especially interested. I may have just gotten a defectively manufactured belt I guess.

Yes, exciting isn't it? Mine failed heading into the uphill at Lime Rock and I found religion while I tried to make the turn. The problem is probably not your belt but the pulleys. They are plastic and can wear. The belt then slips over a bit and splits in half. We replaced mine with Hyundai metal pulleys which are more robust.
^ What he said, I did the same thing and replaced mine with the Hyundai metal pulleys.

Hyundai pulleys x 2 and a fresh (plastic) tensioner pulley from mitsu will solve this. I had the same thing happen.
Once you get the new belt on look *very* closely and make sure they all line up; I know on Murlo's metal ones they needed a washer to offset them ever-so-slightly to make sure the belt lined up nicely.
Good luck!
