EDIT: I take my opinion back after reading your reply to someone's comment. Perhaps some of the other posts on this thread are more accurate than mine.

BTW, what city are you in? Maybe other owners can check it out for you?

Have you pulled up th rear seat yet? It's pretty common.

I may have the smell you are talking about (2010 GSR with 14,500 mi). I would not say burning hair, more just a really hot engine which leads to parts that aren't metal getting super hot and burning off the outer layers...I know when it is clutch and tires caused I know what I abused with my previous driving. Other than that, the engine just gets hot and needs better cooling...

The one pattern I see in this thread is the people complaining about the smell (xRANGERxDANGERx, beantown, dhatw, and myself) all have a 2012.

And it isn't a clutch smell. Atleast I have never smelt a clutch smell like that. And when I get on the throttle or go into boost my foot is no longer on the clutch.
Had my tcase replaced at 15k. Bone stock and babied. The smell of the fluid on the hot exhaust sounds like what you're describing.

If you're stock and under warranty I can't see why your so hesitant to go to the dealer.

well i had the same smell before putting any mods on and it only smells after ive done a few pulls. i know for sure its not the tires. not sure what a burning clutch smells like. i wonder if it isnt the heat shield above the turbo giving off that smell...wish i had a piece of heat shield and a blow torch lol. close my garage door and heat that thing up and see what it smells like. i know the smell is coming form under the hood and that shield is hot as shizzz after driving. i live in central texas so im sure that doesnt help. been getting slightly cooler weather past few days and have noticed the smell isnt as bad...im sure its prob not the shield but never heard anyone else mention it so food for thought...

I'm in Austin, Round Rock, actually. When it was 103 a few days ago, I smelt the burn, and my fan ran after I stopped the car (normal as per the manual). Today was cooler and no burning smell.

I get the smell as well. Seems like it's only higher RPM's or pulls going over about 4k or so. It's not tires or clutch, I know what those smell like. Almost burning rubber-like, but not as strong. Definately smells in the cabin when it happens, and definately comes from under the hood. It's not the turbo per se, as I can induce the smell by going up over 80mph+ off boost. '11 GSR with 17k miles here.

I could believe it's just things getting toasty under the hood - damn does it get hot under there. I'm thinking beefier radiator and intercooler setup might help.

Keep in mind a bigger radiator and/or intercooler means less airflow into the engine bay.

Thread revival, anyone find a specific cause for this? I'm glad to see that it's common, I guess.

The first time I smelled it was while tracking a Lexus ISF. It was bad enough that the track officials radioed about the smell. No cause found for the ISF.... Then I recognized the same smell when doing pulls in my Ralliart. I just hope it's not harmful!

You guys check your ayc fluid? My 2011 had a smell similar to what you guys are describing, it was caused by the rear diff leaking ayc fluid and it was burning on the exhaust. Thankfully the warranty covered the rear diff. I think they said it was close to six grand for the diff and labor.

I have a ralliart, no ayc, just acd. 60k miles and the fluid level was fine, then just had the 60k mile maintenance and all good (replaced those fluids), still smells. Heat shield around the turbo looks discolored though.... maybe it's just freakin hot and heats up the parts around there...

Its only normal if you are crossing over 5k rpm and pushing it. Every car i've owned in the past had burning smell when i actually gave it a little gas
