3 Port: Do I need one...?

I'm ready to get tuned and I have the following mods: Cobb inlet, Cosworth drop-in, ETS UICP, and Greddy Ti C catback. I do not want a test pipe/ downpipe due to to smell, noise, and inability to remove CEL. I'm getting a Cobb AP and a pro tune. Is a 3 port necessary? Would it add any benefit? Any negatives? I want the boost curve to hit 26 and drop to 18 or 19. I will be taking the car to Forged in Atlanta for the tune. Any thoughts, comments, and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Best advice anyone can give you on modding is - talk to you tuner and see what they prefer.

I say get the 3-port. The X loves a good 3-port and can make good numbers with it. And it makes boost come on a little quicker.

I also say get a HFC. not too much smell and shouldn't be a CEL. There are good numbers to be had over the stock cat. Downpipe, meh.. Not so much. The 02/DP takes forever to install and the small gains just aren't worth it to me..

Also, nice to see another GA Evo.. There aren't many of us. What part of GA u from?

I have a test pipe and cant smell anything in my car. The cel can be disable by the tuner as well. I also dont think the test pipe made the car any louder for some reason, maybe 5% louder at the most. 3port is nice but talk to your tuner first

The 3 port will help hold boost and get more power out of the car. I would say get one and have the tuner install and tune it the same day. Perrin and Grimspeed make good 3 ports.

So no one notices a smell with a test pipe?? I find that very hard to believe. Sit in your car while it idles with the window down and tell me it doesnt smell. Or drive behind someone with a test pipe and tell me it doesnt smell. I had a test pipe with the stock downpipe and stock catback for a very short time. The smell was so bad I got a high flow cat which got rid of the smell.

It definitely smells bad from behind. There is no question about that. I really don't smell anything in the car either..

The tuner said the decision was totally up to me. He can tune it either way. What kind of benefit will it provide? The tuner definitely wants me to run a test pipe or high flow cat. The test pipe is totally out of the question, and I just don't know if the gains on the high flow cat are worth it. It really sucks that the TP's smell so bad. That, and the fact that the P0139 and P0140 CELs are not fully defeatable with Cobb's software on 2011's and up.

Well, the HFC will definitely get you some gains. Prolly around 10hp or so, maybe more. If you do get a TP, you can always run a "anti-fouler" on the O2 sensor if Forged can't disable the CEL- which im sure they will be able to. There are plenty of ways to make sure no CEL's pop up, atleast from the tp anyway..

And as mentioned in the thread, the 3-port helps to hold boost, allows boost to come on quicker, and it allows the tuner to very accurate when tuning the boost. You always make more power with a 3-port. And for some reason, the X likes 3-ports better than the traditional boost controller..

I would def get the 3 port for all the reason state above on this thread. As far as tp or high flow cat goes. Yes they do smell but you won't smell it yourself but the person behind you will. I only ever smelled it faintly when I was stopped for several minutes due to an accident and I had all my windows down. I ran ams dp/tp/single exit exhaust. You'll save about $100 w/ a tp over an high flow cat. That right there pays for your 3-port

I wasnt planning on getting a 3 port when I get my first tune. I have the ETS intake, UR exhaust now and will have the AMS downpipe and I am going to try the test pipe. Road Race told me I will need a 3 port. I guess they have their own. So I will go with it since they are the pro's. Not much more expensive. Maybe 100 bucks or something.

As far as the smell. Maybe a lot of you guys are too young to rememeber that there was a time when ALL cars had that smell. It was just part of owning a car. LOL We are sensitive these days I guess. I go to Cars and Coffee in Irvine, CA every week and when all the muscle cars start up you get that smell. It's a good smell. It's what makes your cars GOOOOOOOOO!!

If you are worried about poor mother earth, you can justify it by telling yourself that all these people in their hybrids are making it possible for you to go catless. Besides, how fun is it to have a Prius behind you getting a nice big whif of what a car is supposed to smell like?

I rememeber as a kid going to the Orange County Drag strip with my dad and my eyes watering when the Top Fuel dragsters lined up. And who doesnt think the scent of a two stroke dirtbike isn't better than any woman's perfume? They should make that for them. Guys would be all over them. Awww the smell and sound of two strokes running around El Mirage at 6am.
