Gauge mounting on Steering Column
Gauge mounting on Steering Column
Hey guys, I need some ideas on how to mount my single gauge like in this picture.

What's the best way to go about mounting it in that area?

Do you mean what gauge cup you should buy? Or mounting methods?
Either way, the way I did it was I purchased the Autometer 2204 gauge cup, and just mounted it on that same exact position you see, with double sided 3m industrial tape. They give you screws to screw into the steering column, but I didn't feel like putting holes on the cover.

You could just screw it in as stated above or they actually make steering column covers that can be a direct replacement for the OEM and hold a gauge. I believe that steering column cover is pretty cheap OEM, so you could pick one up down the road if you want to remove the gauges without showing holes.
He doesn't have a write-up per say, but he's a nice guy and I bet could do a write-up or give some pointers while attaching them on the far sides of the column. Here was his recent thread:

And because of this thread I'm now seriously considering the Stack mechanical boost gauge over the Garrett I was dead set on...
Jeez.

Well, first I think you need to buy some gas... We had a couple of gauges mounted similarly and I'll admit, they were a bit distracting. I suggest, before a permanent solution, you experiment a bit with some tape to hold it in place. Ultimately we removed them and moved them to the vent left of where the radio is located. It's a racecar, so the application is different, but think about it a bit before you start drilling.
Although I love Toad's install, I'm with John.
For my X, I have them on the pillar. I like being able to see my cluster without anything on the column. This is one of those times I *really* miss my Subaru with the 3gauge clock-pod setup.
I can't wait to get and install a WB AFR in the next week or so. I put a distribution block together when I did the boost gauge, so it should be super easy

I personally would place the boost gauge on the column by the empty "space" between 0 and 9K on the tach.
Makes more sense to me I'd reserve that space for some other kind of gauge like an Aeroforce multimeter gauge.

Truth is I want to redo the whole thing when we shift to an AIM cluster. I know, it sounds crazy, but I wold rather have simple lights, like a knock light, for boost, oil temp and pressure, trans temp, (and since it is my fantasy - I want tire pressure and tire temps in car) as long as we have the ability to set the values as to when the lights would illuminate. Gauges are hard to read on the track, especially if they are jumping around, so you really have to decide what's valuable, not just what looks cool. Lights would, at least, tell me what's at or near a threshold.
Yes, I like this idea.

Still up in the air between Garrett Boost gauge or the Stack. I like the color scheme of the Stack which matches the factory perefctly but the position of the needles on the Garrett looks closest to the factory and I guess it wouldn't be too off to have a red needle for boost.
Choices...

If any of those throw the warning light, I just want to find a place to pull over, and then start looking at gauges or logs.
IMO, this position would obstruct view to the main screen (in the center). i put my boost gauge between 0 and 180 on the speedo (as far back as it would go). it only slightly obstructs the brightness button of the dash...
once i get my WB, i'll probably go with a dual pod a-pillar setup...
in the end, experiment and do whatever makes you happy...

I think its based on how you mount the gauges in relation to how you keep the steering wheel and even your own height - line of sight. Also the size of the gauge itself makes a big difference 52mm vs 60mm.
I much prefer the Boost gauge to be with the tach because I had one on my STi away from the "action" of the tach and I was constantly distracted by it. By the tach I'd look at it for reference but I wouldn't be drawn to it.
