So the guys at Competition choose me as one of the canidates to try out their clutches for them for some real world feed back with a high horsepower Evo 10. Up to this point I had already tried the CMFx400 and the Act 6 puck. I had wanted to try for 10’s on pump gas and all season tires before the end of 2012 race season but during my 11.3 @125 pass at Atco raceway the Act 6 puck disc gave up the ghost top of 3rd and beginning of 4th which was like the 5th pass in. After speaking with Competition and explaining to them my goals and what I had already accomplished this season they decided they wanted some feedback on how their segmented full disc in their catalog would hold up to some real world drag strip/street driving. I was skeptical but it’s just testing so I said what ever and was on board with it.
Drivablility:
On Stock CMC, No clutch pill : I felt the pedal pressure was defiantly stiffer than the CMfx400 or Act clutches. On a scale of 1-10, 1 being stock the CM and Act were a 3 and this clutch was a 5. The clutch grabbed in the middle of the pedal throw which I like unlike my previous clutches. My old clutches felt like they didn’t grab till almost the top of the throw which made driving a little uncomfortable since my leg would have to come up so high it would hit the back of the steering wheel.
I felt the clutch was grabby but I think half of that thinking was cause the first day I wasn’t used to it. After 3 days I was able to drive the car much better without having to think about it. Clutch still felt like it wanted to do more than get grocery’s and sit in bumper to bumper traffic. With cams and this clutch sitting in traffic does feel like a chore but I blame my cams for that as much as the clutch.
On Magnus CMC, No clutch pill: This clutch is hands down my favorite for drivability now. That Stock Clutch master must really suck. With the Magnus this clutch pedal is a pleasure to drive with. Don’t know how to explain it but the pedal throws are lighter but have a more reassuring feel to them. Grab point is perfect and pedal feel is great.
Performance:
My old clutches were making my life miserable when it came to lightning fast High RPM shifts. I was starting to lose confidence in my ability to drive my Evo to its potential. The high grab point and lockout/misshifts had me having to granny shift my way down the track just to confirm the shifts. On top of it the Fx400/Act clutches taking longer to reengage on shifts cause of the high grab point made things difficult. If you watch my track vids you’ll see I was struggling. Fast forward to this full disc clutch kit. The Comp rep said cause of their design that they kept the weight down on it to help with the lock out issues other clutches have once you start shifting at 9k plus under a lot of power like I was.
In all honesty guys since I put in this segmented full disc clutch in my Evo I have yet to miss a shift. Matter fact I’ll go one better, I CAN’T miss a shift. I’ll put a money back guarantee on them. I’ve thrown pure lighting at that clutch pedal and shifter and every shift is money. No grinding or hesitation or resistance or lockout just positive reassuring engagement under speed and power. For that I thank Competition because I was starting to think I couldn’t drive good anymore.
Now for what power it can hold. 25 psi (which I trap 125mph on) rolls this clutch holds fine. Wot shift it all day. At the track though I would recommend to not hot lap it. Once it sees heat from the launch and holding all that high rpm Tq through the entire run it defiantly needs a cool down in between sessions for me at least. On 28psi I’m making close to 600whp and it had the clutch slipping a little under power. Trap speeds dropped from 99 in the 1/8 to 95-96 and from 126mph in the quarter to 122mph. 4th gear is my get busy gear and that’s when I can feel the power drop off the most. No love lost though it did better than I thought and it’s still kicking.
Final thoughts:
For a segmented full disc holding up to 550whp+ and track/street runs I was surprised. It’s a good option for any of the stock frame guys and full frame guys 550whp and under I feel if they want to beat on the clutch and last. You just got to remember to give the clutch its proper cool down after a launch. I killed my last clutch hot lapping it real quick and I can tell you this one would do the same. Normal everyday driving with the Magnus CMC though this setup is amazing.
Comp sent me another clutch to try. Next will be the 6 puck one. Since I like the actually drivability of this full disc though for now I’m going to leave the segmented full in for the winter.
Hope this review helps. This Review is more for the higher whp guys but anything I didn’t cover or questions please feel free to ask.

Interesting review. I'm currently looking for a clutch for my Evo 8. I plan on making 500 whp on an fp black. Is this clutch noisy at all?? When you say it needs time to cool down between runs how much time are we talking? I wont be launching my car every day and want something well mannered for the street. I'm torn between this clutch or the stage 2. Any suggestions?

Clutch is quiet. No chatter. I'd say 10 minutes between launches minimum. Thats just a personal preference. As for suggestions since my car is a10 I cant say what works for the 8's and 9'sOriginally Posted by car_nut15

Honestly though great product. The fact this thing doesn't lock me out with a 9k limiter is amazing but the grab point is great for quick shifting. I'm going to enjoy it for the winter and probably do my first track event on it with the new CMC.Originally Posted by Dominic@CCI
Thanks for the honest review!
Off topic but I drove my boys car with the Comp twin setup and it was absolutely amazing. That clutch honestly feels better then my full disc somehow. maybe its black magic or something. After I try out this 6 puck I'm defiantly getting one. He's not an online dude but maybe I'll get him to do a review.

NP guys. I had a vid of me at the track on it. I was wrong to say it didn't hold cause I did a tire smoke show on launch (I two stepped the car pretty hard though). I'm starting to think I just slipped the clutch too long.
Another update.
I love this clutch. From a roll it's been holding 30psi like a champ. I'm going to the track again on Sunday for evo sti day. Track prep will be garbage as usual so we'll see what happens. I don't have my hopes up for anything special.
Also I got some video of the car vs that competition twin disk car I mentioned above. It's filmed in Mexico if you know what I mean so PM me if you want a link to watch it on youtube.

I decided to pull my clutch out to put in the Comp 6 puck before I head back to the track. I must say the clutch held up well. About 40 launches mostly on street tires but the last 10 where on a hoosier Drag radial and god knows how many runs in Mexico on it. I was going nuts with the roll racing for a while. Id say about 6 thousand miles daily driving on it since November.

I'd like to think (and hope) that I treated this clutch more extreme then the average person. I really tried to beat this thing up. The pucks them selves still had life in them but disc itself was starting to bow. That ones my fault. I was hot laping it again when I got frustrated at the track. You really can't hot lap these disc and expect them to hold up. Again I must stress they need a curtsey cool down if you want to take care of them
So I got the six puck in now. I got about 150 miles on it and one Mexico run. I gotta say the clutch isn't as grabby as the full disc if that makes any sense. That full disc felt snappy like you could stall at any moment if you weren't paying attention but this fulldisc is pretty forgiving. Drives smooth. Too smooth..... I actually miss the race feel of the full disc lol. did acouple WOT shifts at 9k and all went in smooth. Looks like the 6 puck should work out fine.
What I did notice is that if you slip it too long from a stock you can feel the puck "Skipping" against the flywheel. That's normal for all 6 pucks but the fulldisc defiantly don't do it like the 6 puck does.
