I owned a Range Rover, I can assure you, that ~2000 in maintenance for 5 years of ownership is NOTHING.

I was under the impression that timing chains were meant to 'not be replaced during the lifespan of the vehicle.' At least that's what we were told in training when I worked at a Hyundai dealership.

Always put the weight of the car on the e-brake, not the transmission.

Most people let their car roll in gear before they set the emergency brake. It's an old school way of thought, but what happens is that this puts undo stress on the chain because the clutch is engaged and trying to turn the motor. You can actually force your motor to turn over if you are on a steep enough hill.
Almost... I have an old school question if whats above is true? How come not ALL cars have the same problem when parked. If your statement was true then every car would have chain tensioning problems, not to mention that the car has a chain tensioner that puts pressure on the chain all the time anyway. Thinking the better assumption would be that the chain is made to strech to a degree and is over stretching, or its made from inferior materials and is over stretching as its run. Feeling pretty sure its not from parking thats stretching the chain--its a design issue.

3rd was the ACD pump failing - $8, fixed it myself.

This is starting to get rediculous!!! I thought this was going to be a good car, boy was I wrong!!!
In europe they call this car the "poor mans porsche" Now you know why...

Besides the timing chain, I think you did a great job saving money and did your best to keep the cost down. When I go on the hunt for a X, I'm going to make sure its late 2011 or up.

that's "nickel diming to death"?

i'd hate to ask what you think about when it comes to owning a 2001 Audi S4... where spending $2,000 a year on maintenance is something normal, LOL

i never bothered to update my evom info, but i sold that a while back. the maintenance on the A4 was almost the same story... every couple of months there would be something new. control arms, cam seals leaking, valve cover gaskets leaking, plugged PCV system, LCD pixels on cluster going bad, sensors of all sorts, etc etc
