Blow off valve stuck open?

Problem: Car at low RPMs, feels like little to no boost.
RPMs above 4000 boosts picks up and shoots up to what feels like 75% max boost from 4k-7k.
When shifting from 1-2 2-3 3-4 the engine seems to have no strain and just pulls like a normal car/non turbo. boost gauge reads no boost until i floor it.
Fresh/new oil leaked onto downpipe.
This is 3 weeks and 1k miles after I had a new turbo installed.

if the valve is stuck open, it would feel alot like a slipping clutch. take it apart and oil up the parts..

Yeah, most likely your valve is open. I had the same problem. Simple fix with some lubrication.

hmmm.. took the car to AMS and they cant figure it out. they said that it could be the boost control solenoid, as vishnu uses the stock one and ams always swaps it out for a manual control. Shiv is calling them to get on the same page and figure this out.

Sounds to me like you have a wastegate out of adjustment. Trying tighting the wastegate arm down some and then see how it feels.

I bought the first EVO in the US. I know what a slipping clutch feels like as i went through 4 in the first 32k miles before they finally replaced the tranny under warranty and omg no more smoked clutches :P Any idea what would cause the wastegate to open like that? if that is the problem.

Everything was working fine. I live in Chicago so I don't get to open it up as much as I would like being on city streets and all. Everything was fine for about 1000 miles after the new install (GT3071) then I noticed the lack of boost and after checking hoses and pipes noticed oil on the bottom of the down pipe. From what I can tell it's coming from under the turbo so perhaps the return line. Haven't had a whole lot of time to look under it though.

Hmmm. It would appear that the cat back O2 wire had come undone and was dragging on the pavement. It was still plugged in but wore through 2 of the wires. I patched them up and the CEL turned off but it still feels a bit sluggish. Gonna have a dealership do my next oil change and check everything while they are at it.

So uh, I should have had a dealer look at it sooner. Was driving up to my parents on friday (Chicago-6hours north) got about half way and here's what happened. Cruising at 75 mph, I hear a loud bang and it feels like all 4 tires locked up for 1/2 a second. The car then stutters and trys to stall. I pull off to the side of the road and sit there. The car was running fine then. I put the car in first gear and let out the clutch and it starts to sputter and stalls itself out. started again and tried reverse. same thing. The clutch doesn't feel like it's slipping at all. The extremely loud and annoying fuel pump whine that mitsu never took care of that thank god i have documented from a week after i bought the car is now louder then ever and gets louder when i let out the clutch. I popped the hood and reved the engine a little and it sounds fine. boost is there. no leak noises. (((called mitsu road side sorry we cant help you 1800 number and they did send a tow truck and left me stranded at a strange dealership at 6:30 at night with no way to get home or to my parents. 30 dollar cab ride to the airport and a 300 dollar car rental later im at my parents and my car is 3 hours away.))) Any ideas what would cause all that?(other than mitsubishi's crappy customer care and road side assistance)

Sounds like an IC pipe busted loose. You wouldn't "hear" the leak per se, but anytime you try to get on the gas, it would sputter and choke horribly.

When the car isn't in gear it's fine though. It's only when I try to move the car. If I shut it off for 10-15 minutes as soon as I start it, it will go for about 5 feet then start sputtering again.

Yeah, but that's because the engine doesn't build boost without load, and you have no load without the car being in gear. When an IC pipe blows off, it's quite a violent occurrence, and then you can't build any positive boost whatsoever without the car choking and sputtering terribly. I would expect it only to occur under load while moving and trying to accelerate.

To be clear, though, are you saying you can rev it to 7k in neutral with no problem whatsoever?
