I say new because you'll get the full warranty and probably some sort of special financing/manufacturer deal with a new vehicle. Plus, the dealership will have more 'play' money on the price than with a pre-owned one. The phantom black MR sounds delicious.

Thanks for all the input so far everyone. I am definitely leaning towards a new EVO, based on everyone confirming my thoughts.

However, I may have come across a used 2008 EVO MR, fully loaded, with low mileage, ans supposedly never owned by anyone but dealerships. I am finding out all the details and may go see it this weekend.

My question for everyone is... Assuming this car is in excellent condition, what are the differences between 2008 and 2012/2013 MR? I know the large rear spoiler is one difference (which I don't like), but anything else... Mechanically or with the packages? I think I read the sound system has gotten better over the years?

If I do go this route, I would definitely try to swap the trunk out for one with just the lip spoiler.

Before anyone responds, I did my own research and found this thread...
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...erences-3.html

... And I just spammed that thread by accident bc I thought I was replying to this one, sorry to anyone it affects.

So, the difference that concerns me the most is the 2008s are not tuned as well as newer models. I assume this can be corrected pretty easily with a proper tune? And I am sure I can search threads here for that info too. But if anyone has any good input, I'd still appreciate it.

The 2008's run "richer". So they use more gas. That means the tune is actually making it slower. Once you buy a few mods you will want/need a new tune which solves that.. A stock 2008 will run fine, just be a little slower than the brand new models stock vs stock because of the tune. Even if you don't change anything parts and get a pro-tune, you would be faster than a new stock 2013..

You will end up getting a new tune eventually anyways, so I wouldn't be too concerned about it..

Engine, tranny, etc.. wise, they are basically the same. The 2008's came with the aluminium valve cover and the 2010+ come with a plastic one, so that's nice.. The timing chain was upgraded in the 2012+ and some of the 2011's.. I have a 2008 with 47500 miles and have never had a single issue with my car ever.. VERY reliable if you keep up with maintenance..

A little birdy once told me to not get the first year of a new model due to overlooked first time around mistakes.

Pretty vague, who's the birdy? Don't you think if the price is right a good tune/mechanic could help fix these "mistakes" you speak of?

In most cases, the first model year of every car doesn't have the "kinks" worked out and they are little things the manufacturer changes for the next years..

But again, my 2008 has always been rock solid.. 0 issues. Plus if it is a new car like you say, shouldn't it have a warranty? Haha.

People on the 2008s say these are the concerns:
Timing chain: effects 2008-2011, only half 2011s
Diff pins: effects 2008 & 2010
Fuel pump relay: effects almost every year of the X.

There isn't a whole lot to change from the 2008s and the 2010s besides little stuff. The power train and drivetrain are the same..

I know it might be a drive but I drove to Florida to get both of my evos. I went to RC Hill Mitsubishi for one of my evos. It looks like right now you can get an MR from $34k-$38k. They were upfront and it only cost me a hotel room. Hope it helps.....

USED 2008 EVO MR - 32K OTD, 4000 miles, only owned by Mitsubishi according to carfax, SSS package, Nav unit, aero kit, large spoiler - 0.49%-0.99% through car buying service.

OR

NEW 2012 EVO MR - 40K OTD, Premium package, interior package - 1.49%, dealer does not qualify for car buying service. Yes, it is a left over 2012, 14 miles on it before my test drive.

Ready to commit to one of these, but having issues deciding. What do the experts say?

This is basically where I was going with my comment. I mean for christ's sake, Mitsu didn't even put felt on the inside of the window panels in the 08 Lancer, as a result any window tint you have gets wrecked unless you install some moleskin yourself. Some minor things, others maybe not so minor, the point being that the first model year usually has these little kinks that get resolved over the life of said model so if you can buy newer why not.

Oh, the little birdy was just my experience from when I sold cars.

Its not on any model year of the EVO. But yes if you get cheap tint the rubber will wreck it.. If you have great tint it will not hurt it at all. ( a $99 tint job is not even fair tint. ) I don't know what you got just saying.

They charge some crazy dealer fee on top of their advertised prices. That's what I noticed when shopping for my evo X. At the end of the day I bought local because the price difference was maybe 500 bucks after shipping?

I think the 2012 used evo would be good and you would save 2,000-5,000 and you could spend that on mods haha

Better deals? Out the door? With my hefty DC 7% sales tax? (Not that I've mentioned that before)

I saw one at Carmax, paint swirls, and no negotiating, hated the salesman. I really dislike Carmax.

The 2008 already sold, and I think I found 2013 for a good price, so the 2012 may no longer be the front runner...

2013 MR with Premium Package at $38,300, which equals $41,252 out the door in DC (7% tax and about $200 for tags and doc fees). No? Yes? I say yes
