105000 miles evo x review
105,xxx miles on my 08 Evo x. All in all I proberly wont get another evo....ever. Just to many problems that don't make sense because I baby the hell out the car. I am constantly scared every time I drive it that something else is going to pop up. If anything shows my driving habits, I didn't replace my clutch until about 80,000 miles and I still had life on it, only replaced it because the tranny decided to die at 80,xxx and it was already dropped so I just put a new clutch and fly wheel in. Heres my list on problems the occurred...
55,000 miles- AYC pump failure ($1500)
65,000 miles - AYC pump failure ( 1500) YES MY PUMP FAILED TWICE, MITSUBISHI WOULD NOT COVER IT!!
65,000 miles - ALL my knobs lights inside the car ( A/C knobs and radio ) stopped lighting up. ( $250 to replace ) * I purchased a 08 outlander A/C control knobs since they looked the same and it worked. The 08 outlander knobs are the same as the 08 evo and are 5x cheaper for anyone who has this problem.
AT about 70,000 miles rattles, clicks, clanks start whenever I stop and go. After some research this seems to be experienced by numerous evo x owners. It only happens when I come to a complete stop and then go, theres always a click or a clank. Mitsubishi said this is normal- when its cold it does this and when rotational mass warms up the joints it stops. Only problem is it doesn't.... There is a TSB on this regarding the CV joints... I have been to numerous auto shops and they say everything is fine. ( These noises where in no way related to the Transmission, so before you guys say this )
89000 miles COMPLETE TRANSMISSION failure - had to get new trans ($3700) with install. *I still had life on my stock clutch, if that tells you guys anything. While driving doing about 30 mph I hear a loud pop, almost as if I got hit by another car and cars shut off. Turned back on and car was shaking badly- turned out my differential pins came out....WTF!!. EVEN with the new trans and clutch and flywheel my shifting is still notchy.
95,000 miles -recently I have gotten ALL wheel bearings replaced due to a strange whopping sound as if my wheel was not tightened all the way. I finally bought some wheel bearings on a hunch and it has fixed the problem. When I removed stock bearings they looked pretty bad. ($550)
My struts are leaking, I know this because now every time I hit a bump my car sounds like its going to fall apart. ( about $300 for a set of used struts I found on here with about 35000 miles on them ) I refuse to buy new since Im not sure if im keeping this car.
Also my A/C and heat stopped working ...... ALL I hearing is a grinding sound like a BRRRRRRRRRRRRRR when I turn It on....NO CLUE what the hell happened. WHO knows how much this is going to be.... I will most likely have to buy a complete A/C assembly which is a couple hundred dollars...
ALL that is on my evo is intercooler piping and a exhaust.
Now you tell me if im wrong to have lost faith in this car. I was just so hyped when I got it but I feel like I drive around a piece of ****. And its not about the money and I understand maintance but I do not feel as this is routine maintaince. I have suffered severe problems that I have never had on any of my previous cars. Im sure im missing things but I have spent a little more than $9000 fixing this car and its has been sitting in my driveway more than I have actually gotten a chance to drive it. Just once I hit over 50000 miles , everything just started to go wrong.
My interior cloth looks horrible, the recaro seats are falling apart and look like ****... staples which connect the fabric all came out... I have fixed it but just me knowing that its eventually gonna fall back out again pisses me off.
My oil pump has been replaced due to a humming noise it was making. replaced it and noise has stopped.
I have just lost faith. I am currently looking at a 2013 Subaru WRX which I will proberly trade this POS in to get. We will see my car is paid off so im not sure if I should keep it or get rid of it.. the way I see it, why would I keep it if stuff constantly go wrong.
****Also forget to mention the other day, both my key fobs stopped working.. called mitsui and its $150 to reprogram.. how this happened I have no clue.

Sounds like you got a lemon? Sorry to hear about all of your issues. If you do get the WRX I doubt you'll be disappointed with it, I test drove a 2013 before I got my car and it was a great car (I'm sure I'll get some harassment from this). The interior is great, no rattles lol. I have a lot of friends with Subaru's and they love them. Make the best choice for you man. If I was in your position I probably would've already sold it.
Yea man, I don't care about speed anymore. I just want something I can modd lightly and have it work. The things that throws me off is my engine despite all the other problems still runs strong. Just for clear mind, I got a compression test done about a month ago and 140 145 across the board. Just everything seems to be suspension, transmission related besides all my interior woes and both my AYC pumps.
I also forgot to mention constant weird idle !! Urghh I just hate it lol.

Wow.. Did you buy the car new?
I've had the X for over 4 years and have had none of those issues, besides some interior rattles and the staples on the seats coming out.. I haven't had a single issue reliability wise..
The one thing I really don't look foward to is the AYC pump.. They can't last forever, but they are expensive.. The problem I have is that I don't know where I would get it changed. I don't trust the dealer here because they just became a Mitsu dealer. They were a Mazda dealer already.
When you change the pump, you have to bleed the system right? I wish I could just do it myself, but I don't have the tool obviously. Is the Cobb AP have the firmware available yet to bleed the system?

Can you tell us how often you change your Transmission Fluid, Transfer Case, and Diff fluid?
I think every owner should follow severe schedule with EVO, because we don't drive EVO like a accord
if you changed your fluid at 30K interval I wouldn't be surprised that your tranny blew.
AYC pump is know to fail every 3 to 4 years, if you have one failed within 2 years brand new then it must be a bad installation maybe it wasn't bleed correctly.

Threads like this make me quiver. I knew what I was getting into when I bought my car, but d***, this is just nuts. I have a friend who has an 08 X and has around 95k-100k miles. He's never had any issues. Aside from some lady cutting him off and ramming him into a guard rail. Really sorry about your whole situation, and I hope you stay with Mitsu, but I can see why you wouldn't. Do what you feel is necessary.
Sadly Im worried the same may happen with my car, I just hit 26k miles on it and had to have all the input bearing replaced( I thought it was the tcase because I was getting the death whine) and now in 5th once I get up to almost 70 it starts making a high pitched whistling type noise. So Ive already gotta bring her back in.
My IX was a total champ though, drove it harder than anything ever before on the stock tranny, even went through a fence on the track after a tire went out. Nothing was wrong despite the underside getting raped by massive rock I went over. Even ran some pretty high boost with over 400whp on the stock engine. The new owner says the engine is still perfect for him and its been awhile lol.
If I sell this X, ill just buy a built IX with super low miles

Oil change every 5,000 miles. Trans and differentials every 30,000 miles. Keep in my I only drive well used to drive this car every other day. I have a DD ( 02 wrx ) so this was just my toy. Now these problems didn't occur all at once and I did have periods of peace but **** would just pop up every 9000 miles or so. I work about 100 miles away all highway so it was hardly ever in stop and go traffic. I used the rec. oil for all changes.
All installs were done by a local shop here in NJ. I have known the guy for years so I am confident on his work.
I bought it semi new with about 2000 miles on it from the dealership paid $27995 back in 09.
Ayc is the only time I paid mitsubishi since you have to use that stupid machine. I have own a evo 8 which was my reason to stay in the game with the x. My 8 was totaled when I hit some ice and slid into a curb otherwise I would still have it .

I loved the car.....when it worked... But I have tons of spare parts for my evo x it's not even funny. Like I prepp myself for the upcoming damage. I have a extra ayc pump, oil pump, 2 koyo bearings, exedy clutch, 2 front axles cv joint, turbo just in case. I went to a salvage shop located in Rahway nj and grab some of these parts off a wrecked 2010 evo. Got a really good deal last april before I get flamed. Needless to say if I do sell prepare for a part out
My Rex has never gave me problems- couple sensors a clutch but nothing major and I have that car more modded than my x and still on stock engine internals. Wrx has about 70000 miles on it.
As of now besides the AC/heat , keys and struts my evo works. For how long....who knows.

If you dont fall in love with the new WRX(they are nice, I test drove one), maybe look at getting into another 8 or 9, I know there are still a few garage queens out there for sale that have low mileage. Might be able to pick on up for a steal, if not just get a new car with a warranty
Diff pins coming out isn't a complete trans failure. Just saying. it was common on the 08s. 08's in general are going to have more issues in the long run than the 2010's and newer. Mitsu fixed/improved alot of things as the years went on.
