cobb ap vs drop springs
cobb ap vs drop springs
Which should I buy, I have an oem car with only a k&n cone filter , I dont have an afr gauge yet an im not planning on getting one until I go with a full exhaust system. That being said I wonder if running a cobb ap without an afr is safe .the filter I have is right after the maf pipe with the oem air scoop and half a box plus a heat shield .if I dont get the app ill get some good drop springs instead but I would preffer the ap only if its safe to run it without an wideband thx for the help
Your in a Lancer ES right? Cobb apps will only work with Evolution/Ralliarts because they use the same engine/ECU and are turbo'd. It won't work with your ES untile you swap in the engine of the RA/EVO with ECU. For your car if you put a turbo in the only thing you could do is take it to a tuner for a tune. I say save your money for turbo kit or some springs and slam that FF. I'm sorry if I don't know but if you plan on getting a Evo/RA and are asking for that reason I would say buy the basic support mods then have it dyno tuned the app is ok but it's safer getting it protuned on a dyno.
Hope it helps you.

also you can somewhat keep an eye on the fuel with the AP by monitoring the STFT (short term fuel trim) if you're running rich you'll see a negative (-) trim from the system compensating by taking away fuel and if you're running lean you'll see a positive (+) trim from the system adding more fuel. You can at least use that till you can put a wideband on.

You can run all the off-the-shelf (OTS as you'll see them called) maps on the AP without an AFR gauge. Most folks do...
I notice a big difference in responsiveness (e.g. 40-60 or 20-40mph bursts). I don't notice a HUGE power difference overall, it just seems more responsive and fun. Having other cars with a full tune, I can say this isn't it, but at the same time I don't regret the money spent on the AP at all, it does a great job!

honestly depends on how far youll go with your car eventually. one thing i learned after being in the car scene for a while is to do it right the first time. itll save you a lot of money on parts and labor. that being said, the ap is great when youre just starting out. you can log data and monitor your car at the same time and have the ability to switch maps on the go. depending on the springs you get, youll either get a really low ride thats not comfortable at all or a decent ride height decrease and almost stock ride.
The cobb app is really good the only problem I have with it is switching back to stock.
The one I had did not copy the stock map correctly my boost would peak then fall flat then peak agen and tapper down pretty fast after that so I got a tune with 3port all fixed solid 23psi till the turbo runs out at 7000rpm and it tappers.
So I have a little hesitation on the app since that and also with stage 1 and stage 2 tunes with just catback / panel filter I would see knock counts from 2 - 5 regular with a protune they can tune it right with 0 knock.
Those maps are based off there test car in that area running of there gas so it will not act the same for all cars that use it some it's perfect others it needs to be adjusted.
To sum it all up this is good for logging and to have a little more power before you get a real tune on a dyno but in the end your still going to need a dyno tune to get real power and the safety in your tune.

Yep I got that. Well I got the ap should be getting it in a couple of days . I order it from MaP, first thing im going to learn how to use it and log before uploading a new map
You'll be fine. I got my cobb ap 2 weeks ago but never used the OTS maps. Got it pro-tuned immediately at Kaizen with a conservative tune (only 3" Intake, UICP, and catback installed). Tuner told me I shouldn't worry about not having a wideband installed unless I plan to get a 3port and a test pipe/HFC of some sort.
Basically the car runs so rich from the factory that even his wideband wasn't able to pick up what the actual AFR's were (his detect limit was 9.5 and it went below that, WTF Mitsu? Don't you know that you're washing the cylinder's running that rich?)
I'm pretty sure the Cobb OTS maps tune the car to have around 10-11.5 AFR. In typical driving scenarios, the AFR's will actually be more rich than what it is tuned for on a dyno. (Mine's tuned to 11.5).

The only way you can log from the app is if you marry it to the car which makes you install there map to your car you won't be able to log the stock tune and be sure to update it before you connect to your car and hope for the best.
Sure wish you didnt have to do it that way. At least to do some baseline numbers before adding the tunes.
