please help identify ringing/whining noise

for the past year or so i've had this really annoying ringing/whining noise that increases in frequency as the rpm's increase. I thought it was the common issue of alternator whine related to my stereo system but after completely removing all stereo components the noise remains.

it seems to be a bit louder if i have the a/c on but i'm not certain. I tried to determine the location of the ringing which is difficult but it seems to be coming from behind the glove compartment.

at this point when i drive it's really the only noise i hear and it's driving me crazy. any help identifying the likely cause of the ringning/high pitch whine would be greatly appreciated.

video:
if you listen with headphones, ringing noise should be easy enough to hear

thanks!

Have you tried to listen for it with your fan to you A/C off. Sounds like it might be your blower motor for your fan. And the sound gets more high pitched when you hit the gas and that is normal for a cars fan motor to get a little more juice when pushing the gas. You might have tried that but looks like you had the fan on in this video.

with the fan off i still get the ringing unfortunately, it may be quieter with the A/C and/or fan off but it's hard to tell.

Definitely an electrical issue but nothing that is going to affect anything. Sorry bro, If you can't hear exactly where it is, then you can't replace the electrical part that is making the noise. Maybe try to get a friend to ride with you and listen really hard to where it is coming from. Look for anything with a light on it, sometimes circuits with lights built in make that noise. Or maybe try to unplug the lighting to the dash Knobs like on the A/C Knobs and stuff and see if it still does it. Can you hear it when you are sitting at idle?

Are we sure this noise isn't drivetrain related? noise gets louder when on throttle if I'm hearing it correctly?

That sounds like it's some form of electrical interference to me... I get the same high pitched frequency noise that matches and increases/decreases with RPM when I have my phone charging in the 12V and hooked up to aux...

I used to get that on a older car i had, the noise would actually come through my speakers because I had a bad ground on my aftermarket radio, but it looks to me the radio is not in it...

yea like i said i thought it was a stereo related issue, so i removed all components, wires, receiver, amp , speakers etc.. it's all removed from the car and the noise is just as loud.

at idle there is no noise, but if i rev the engine in neutral the noise occurs, the frequency or pitch increases as the rpm's increase, i'll try and pinpoint the location of the noise better. it does seem to be around the area of the blower fan behind the glove box. If the fan is off on the dash, does that motor still spin if you rev the engine? if so it could be that

I would pull the serpentine belt off and start it, rev it and see if the noise is still there just to rule out any crazy pulley noise.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say fuel pump (not the relay, the pump). It runs low voltage when not being asked to flow a lot of fuel. Then the ECU kicks it up to 12volts when you are starting to need more fuel as you accelerate.

It's plausible that the whine may be the sound of the pump working.... But it does sound electrical as well to me too. I'm with you on the audio equipment and checking grounds.

Fuel pumps are known to whine too sometimes.... My Cobra had a high pitched whine that ended up being my fuel pump struggling to push fuel past a clogged fuel filter. Sounded just like a speaker so that's why I pose this as a possible root cause.

Good luck

Are you running a stock fuel pump?

I found the source of the noise, it's the panel with the hazard lights and passenger air bag light

here's a link to a picture of it http://imgur.com/HXjWaDL

if i unplug this part, no more ringing! i took a look at the circuit board and there's nothing obviously wrong. I guess i'll have to determine if i should just order a replacement one.

OMG I have a similar whine and while some of it is the fuel pump, this may be the rest. I'm going to take mine out and see what it sounds like.

I am glad you found the problem. I wouldn't be able to stand that noise either.
