Lol, how do I drive this thing...

So I come from a Speed 3 where you were an idiot if you tried to WOT at anything below 2500 RPM's..kinda looking for little tips like that for this car.

...sometimes while driving, I'll be cruising down the highway in 4th or 5th and give it a good bit of gas and the boost shoots up but the car doesn't seem to accelerate too much faster...I come from a 300whp/320wtq speed 3 and I'm use to being torn out of my seat! So I think I'm maybe driving this thing wrong...

I've been English tuned and have test pipe / EBC / intake ...hit 350whp/318wtq...

What RPM's do I want to make sure I'm over before trying to take off? 3K? ...is it alright to bring her somewhat close to redline before shifting while pushing or do you shift way prior to that?

Essentially, what are some small notes to keep in mind while driving this car...

again, im new to the AWD world, so I appreciate any advice.

I dont go WOT unless im at about 2.5k or 3k, I dont like to put the added stress on the rods but then again im at 390wtq.... I never go WOT in 5th unless its coming from a 3rd, 4th, 5th pull.

Do not do 5th gear pulls.. Or 4th gear in low rpms. It puts too much stress on the engine internals.

Go WOT when you are around 3k and up.. Going to redline is "fine".. Don't go over redline and just know that with the X's smallish turbo you are out of the main power band around 6k..

You're used to a bigger engine and a smaller turbo with that MZR, but the 4B11 is a much better engine. Get the car tuned and rev her deep. I always shift beyond redline, ESP with an upgraded turbo. Peak power is high in the rpm band in a modified Evo.

...and you don't have to cringe accelerating out of a turn (like a 'speed3) or stop pulling hard from a traffic light because it is rainy/slick conditions, eh? AWD FTW!

Used to have a moderator around here called "GearDownSon", and truer words were never spoken. I'll re-iterate what ugakirk said. Doing pulls at low rpms is a good way to blow an engine. Shift down / Rev-match and take off. You shouldn't ever be doing pulls in 5th, unless you're already doing about 100.

Trying slapping on a bigger turbo 350hp won't feel fast.

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle.....

Stock motor, it's fine to floor it in 5th on the freeway even if you are not doing 100mph. On both of my Evo's I've never had problems with lots of freeway driving and WOT from 2700-3000rpm. I just smoothly roll on it for passing and such.

As soon as you mod and really up the torque, you are less advised to do that. Using the MPG display you simply start gently giving it gas until the indicator drops to around the 15mpg mark. Then don't floor it past there until you are above 3200rpm~ where you smoothly press it farther until you're WOT.

Basically you can still use some low end power, just keep the load low by looking at the realtime fuel monitor so the engine doesn't make a dangerous amount of torque too early.

Personally I think the tuner should set up the WGDC/TPS maps such that in higher gears it won't hold boost at lower rpm to prevent the load-induced torque spike. Then you can go back to driving like stock and the car simply won't let you do that. Others keep it simple and don't idiot proof the car. Personal preference takes over at that point.

I also came from a speed 3 and even getting all the bolt ons and a good tune you'll never get the same pull out of the X. You WILL be faster than your old speed 3 but it just doesn't feel like it because it's a bigger car with less torque. To get anywhere near the pull (the feeling) you'll probably need to upgrade the turbo or go e85.

In the X there's not many instances where you can't go WOT due to traction. I remember that most people would launch around 3k rpms in the speed 3. In the X there's a launch rev limiter of 5500 (GSR), that's fine. This car is bigger and has AWD so revving higher is needed.

Plus FWD with boost really, really sucks.
