Unhappy New to Evos. Overboosting Issue!

Ok guys Im completely brand new to all this and just bought my first evo. Its a 2008 Evo X with a Magnaflow Catback, I think HKS VTA bov ( may be a different brand but ill have to double check that) And a K&N cone filter on stock piping. Well for the first time today after having the vehicle only a few days i really tried to get on it a little bit. Well when the turbo spooled up i looked at the boost gauge PO installed and it shot up quickly over 30psi! I know that is not normal, seeing as when this happened the car like bucked and the asc off light came on with a nice little ! in my dash saying swc service required. Turned off and restarted and back to normal. But every time i go to WOT it does this so obviously i have been taking it rather easy so i do not do any major damage. My question is what could be causing this? Like i said I'm new to turbos and have been doing my research and noticed other have had this happen but most say it needs tuned. I would like to do this soon but in the mean time i would like to know if there is any way to control this? Is this a wastegate issue? I believe everything is stock like no aftermarket boost controller or anything of that sort. I have been reading and decided to replace the bov with a recirculating style like everyone recommends. I just do not have an extra grand laying around at the moment to be "guessing" what the issue may be. Any input would be helpful. Ill keep searching about the issue but if there is a way to turn it down with a manual boost controller or adjusting the wastegate to decrease the boost? Sorry Im quite the noob with some of this stuff. Also the previous owner said he didn't mod anything other than what i listed.

check the vacuum lines running to your wastegate and from your turbo, and make sure they all run to there normal positions.

if there all normal, then maybe unhook your waste gate rod and see if you can open the wastegate flap by hand to make sure its not stuck. you could loosen the waste gate rod while your in there and maybe thatll help?

but it sounds like theres a after market boost controller in there and turned up, or there was one and he removed it and hooked up the vacuum lines wrong from the turbo, waste gate and boost control solenoid

hope that helps, id start there. its free!

Thank you for the vacuum diagram link. That'll help a ton! Ill go check all that out and double check just to make sure there are no boost controllers hidden that i may have missed the first time i checked. Would a vacuum line that may have come off possibly created this issue? or a cracked/leaking hose? I would assume so but correct me if Im wrong. I will also check the flap for the wastegate like suggested. Ill let you guys know what I find here in a little bit after i get out of class.

the waste gate rod is a PITA to remove, i highly doubt your wastegate flapper is stuck, but you never know i guess. so hopefully you find something with the vacuum lines, if one was missing with the stock waste gate you would not over boost. however if they where hooked up backwards or wrong it would.

if you can't sort it out you are close to buschur racing im sure they could get it tuned for you. i went to buschur before but i use TPG tuning now in blairsville PA certainly closer for me, but i would get a tune by buschur just for the mods and to be safe.

Ok heres an update, I checked vacuum lines and everything seems to be in order and no cracks/leaks. I was taking the heat shield off of the exhaust manifold and every bolt snapped off so ill have to mess with that later i suppose. Hopefully not a big deal if i do not have it on for a little while. Now that i have access to the waste gate rod i have a few questions. Should i be able to move that rod by hand while its connected? i would guess i should be able to since thats that moves the flap im guessing but just wanted to check! Aslo if i can move it should it be fairly easy to move or no?

no, you can not move it by hand.

Do you see an aftermarket boost controller? grimmspeed? manual? anything? take a pic and post it.

and get yourself a tactrix openport ASAP. I can tune it if you'd like

Pictures arent the greatest. But the boost gauge is hooked up to the throttle body where the brass connector is and that goes to the top of the bov. The other one with the check valve goes from throttle body to the selaniod. umm the second selanoid with 4 lines running the them. the back ones run to the bottom of the intake after the maf sensor. the other set goes to the wastegate i believe.

you can also simply just run the vacuum line from your turbo to your wastegate and see if you over boost still, if you do, vacuum lines, tune or boost solenoid is the problem im guessin
