wastegate

Is there any differences as far as performance between a recirculated wastegate or an atmospheric one. Is it just personal choice. Also does it help having one or the other to pass emission with a test pipe or do you just have to tune your car to pass emission.

Are you guys talking about the diverter valve (or BOV)? Wastegate passes exhaust gas. If you have it open to atmosphere, some exhaust gas won't pass through the catalytic converter and turn the CO into CO2. If the smog check station can't tell you have it open to atm, I guess it will help you because less exhaust gasses will come out of your tail pipe, where they measure emissions.

I think you are talking about a diverter valve though.

Advantages of direct-dump from wastegate include better top end and more accurate boost control. Disadvantages include being illegal on many streets, killing baby seals, and being disallowed by many sanctioning bodies (such as the SCCA). I was going to include "freaking loud at WOT," but didn't, because, odds are, I'd put it on the opposite list from most people.

Power is never annoying!

That being said, my new setup is going back to recirculated I think, only because that is the way the kit is made not because I am a wuss

Recirculated with a long tube and a smooth re-join is 90%+ as good as dump while still being legal and quiet.

On a stock turbo sure, or even on a small stock frame, but start pushing some bigger power and the gains can be significant.

Also, it's fine to dislike them because it's annoyingly loud, but don't bring legal into it, 99% of the mods people do are illegal so who cares. Also, my state doesn't have emissions testing, so oh well

When you are correcting (what you see to be) someone else's hyperbole, it's best to avoid hyperbole. Or do you really believe that 99% of all car mods are illegal?

LOL, no obviously not. I was simply trying to make a point as you were as well.

But in reality, most things we as enthusiasts do to our cars to modify them are in fact illegal in one shape or another.

I just hate when people (i am not saying you are but many people have done this with open dumps) try to cover up their distaste for something, in this case the open dump pipe, by utilizing the legality issue.

I think its because most just hate how obnoxious it is but to people that like them they want to have a better reason the annoyance to argue against them.
