All my noob questions into one post.
All my noob questions into one post.
I figure why draw out looking like a total moron over the course of multiple posts and just get the humility done and over with in one solid shot.
1) looking for an exhaust with more growl, and more go (not the sound of bees in a soda can that was left on top of a washing machine). I'm thinking turbo back. But, due to living in the great state of NY (ha) I have to pass a state inspection every year. So that means NO CEL. so when it comes to test pipes and different downpipes, is there a way to avoid throwing a code?
2) I kind of have my eyes set on a HKS High Power Dual outlet, then some sort of other pipes from there back (again, if you couldn't tell, total noob.). I haven't seen anyone really mention the HKS exhaust here, so I'm not sure if it's worth the monies or not. If anyone has another suggestion, feel free to throw it out there.
3) Cold Air Intake. yay or nay? From what I gather, the OEM blowoff will actually make a sound that you can hear above the sound of the wind at 30 MPH
4) When going for a tune (now this is where I get really cluless) is a boost controller essential?
Basically my goals are this: I would like my 2012 GSR to have as much power out of basic bolt-ons as possible, but still safe as a daily driver. I would like it as fast as it sounds. I don't want to be THAT GUY. You know, the one that's blowing more smoke out the back of his car at a stoplight than a coal furnace train.
I'm not looking do be doing some tokyo drift ish on the streets. Not that guy. But would be nice to maybe get into some kind of track events with out looking like more of a noob than I am now. So please, save a brother from further embarrassment. Thanks for any kind of assistance!

I bought the turbo back Turbo XS exhaust. I like the sound of it and it was a good price.
I bought the HFC test pipe. I believe it should pass emission standards.
I bought the ets intake. Doing an open intake does produce sound from the OEM diverter valve. But IMO, it is not loud or anything. You will hear it, but it is just a sound of air being let out. It doesn't have a pressured air sound like an aftermarket BOV.
And I would also recommend a 3port with your tune.

I have the Buschur Quiet Exhaust (which is like a modified magnaflow) and a Mil.Spec high flow cat for exhaust. Sounds good, but not obnoxious. I had the HKS Hi-Power and while it sounds great, it did have a lot of drone, which I couldn't take. I also have the K&N Typhoon intake and a Cobb Access port. Good enough to trap 110mph and passes NY State emissions. However, I would probably recommend getting an Ivey Tune to smooth the car out a little.

You have me. You caught my negligence to google. More or less I was looking for a response as to if it was a person in the NY area (the only one I know of is STM in the Rochester area, I was planning on paying a visit in the spring after completing my research and purchasing my parts). But, you're right. Should have just googled. Shame on me.
So Canada! I assumed you were around the metro area and was thinking Ivey would be close to you. I have had success with the off the shelf Map that comes with the Cobb Accessport if finding a good tuner is difficult based on where you are. If you did some more significant mods, I would suggest driving down to NJ to have Ivey tune your car. You definitely need a tune to run mods on this car and the Accessport is a good option. Just make sure you buy an intake supported by Cobb.
