Im on stock tires and in Nj we had bad snow. I work in a car dealer, and when I got there this morning all the piles of snow were frozen that was pushed to the sides the day before. Moral of the story is I was going down a little hill and when I got to the bottom I had to make a quick right to get to where the other guys parked. Car slid sideways because of snow on the ground and I lost total control. LUCKILY there was no damage when I slammed into the snow, why you might ask? The lisence plate took all the damage. A bunch of scratches on the plate but who cares ! For those guys without a plate drilled into your bumper you might want to reconsider!!! I rather have a messed up plate then chips and scratches and long term peeling and repainting and headaches.
I've been out looking at '14 GSR's, and one of the dealers I visited warned me about the performance of the stock tires in cold weather.
I saw a few other posts on this site that have mentioned this as well. Apparently, the stock tires are only rated for minimum 40F. Below that temp the compound gets very hard and it will slip easily, not just on ice and snow but also on sandy on-ramps/off-ramps and other such slippery surfaces. Being that I live in VA, and it's been cold as ***** this winter (along with everywhere else in the US for that matter...), he wanted to emphasize this.
Hopefully by the time I buy one (and I will soon
) it will be warm enough that I can just keep the stock rubber for now, and then wait until next winter to get a 2nd set of wheels/tires and buy some Blizzaks or something to mount on the stock wheels.

I live in NJ as well, when I first drove my car on the snow with the stock tires, I knew I needed to buy tires asap, they are really bad on the cold and even worse on the snow, glad to hear your car is ok and you too.
Ps: I have continental extreme contact DWS very good tires for winter good on wet as well as on snow.

So, you want to warn us that, we should all get a licence plate bracket so it will save the car from damage in case we crash because, we are using high performance summer tires in the snow
.
Thank you so much for the great heads up

My drive to work involves more left turns than rights. Should I move my plate to the other side?
And if move back to a one-plate state, should I drive to work in reverse?
I'm so confused.

If you drive to a one plate state you should put a "My other car is a Prius" vanity plate on the front
