Should i get an intercooler?

Hello Evo peeps !!!

I've come to a point in my cars life where I want to know if i should upgrade my intercooler..

My curent list of mods are:
- ets intake
- ams widemouth downpipe
- ams high flow cat
- UR licp
- nisei uicp
- HKS hi power exhaust

thats pretty much it.. i have no plans to go bigger turbo or e85 .. i'm pretty much done.. i will also be getting a tune as well..

Everyone tells me get a 4 inch intercooler but is that overkill?

Any feedback would be great thanks again everyone..

If you're not going bigger turbo or e85, you don't really need an intercooler. Is this just a daily driver? Unless you track your car you realistically will be fine on the stock.

I have all the bolt ons (similar to you), and I just had an AMS downpipe and CBRD intercooler installed...netted about 15whp between the two. Price to performance, I'd skip. I only got them because I have plans to upgrade my turbo soon.

gotcha.. i think i'm going to replace the intercooler cause i just spoke to a speed shop and they advised me that the stock IC is okay unless you do more then a couple pulls.. and i'm not going to lie.. i love driving my car.. and i assume when it's tuned i'm going to love it more.. i really don't want the IC to get heatsoaked so i guess i'm just going to replace it..

The stock FMIC isnt really up to par once the boost is up-

the misconception is that "im on a stock turbo I dont need an intercooler upgrade" which is false-

A small turbo blows higher Outlet temps than a larger turbo at a given boost pressure-

You dont want to go too thick on the X or you will starve the radiator of airflow- and rub everything around it- we've seen some of the 4" plus intercoolers rub holes in the AC condenser line and the core itself-

we have built 4 different evo X designs- and settled on the 3.5" core size- even after massive investment in some slightly thicker cores-

I hope this helps-

Not that a 3.5" is too big. Just raising the issue not mentioned.

And only to play devil's advocate, extra weight right where you don't want it.

That said, I'm totally thinking about one soon, haha.

Need a like button.
That's why the professional (you) weighing in outweighs the internet talker (me).

but is that really an issue compared to heat? isn't heat one of the biggest issue with the x due to the location of the turbo?

I defer to and agree with the experts and say that cooling the change is more important. I was just making sure that all of the issues get out in the open.

Don't know how much of a role the location of the turbo plays. Having the air that cools the surface of the turbo exit the engine bay immediately (down and back), rather than heat up the head, as it did on my DSM, would seem to be a plus.
