He probably had a big plan for the car and clutch was the the first item.
I think the wine is something you'd need to be concerned.
But it sounds like oil pump whine from what you described, if it is gone after a oil change, then I think you will have nothing to worry about.

Well his story is possible but the possibility of this to be a cover-up is also very likely. My best advice is to contact a specialist to have a look at the car before you buy it. Better spent some cash on the research, than reselling a broken car with a lot less value. Good luck!

Definitely agree the inspection. Don't commit if you feel uneasy about the purchase. It nice to purchase a new Evo because you know or at least think you can trust yourself with what you did, but buying used ....who knows what that car has been through. Not saying buying used is a bad option, but be SURE before you pull the trigger. Evos are amazing ;D welcome to the dark side

The whine you mentioned would be the biggest concern for me. Whines usually come from metal-on-metal somewhere in the drivetrain. The death whine is what you get with a blown t-case.

You'll never know why the guy picked the clutch he did. No reason to dwell on it. And I don't know what Stage 4 means exactly, but I'd pass if it's a puck clutch as those suck on the street.

One trick is to look if any bolts have been removed (exhaust parts, intake part, etc) this way you can see if he putted the car stock before selling

I would get a compression test, look at all the bolts in the engine bay to see if it was modified prior.
Chances are something fishy happened. stage 4 makes no sense in this scenerio

just take it to the dealer. The Evo requires shop computers that no one but the dealer has, plus the dealership has no motive. They don't want to upgrade you, sell you anything, they don't care.

As long as they are reputable, just let them do a full workup. Believe me, they will look hard to find things that are wrong.

Thank you everyone for your input! I got it inspected and the shop told me everything cleared out. The wine was associated with some clutch noise but nothing serious. No signs of any other previous modifications either!

Changing the clutch for no reason other then he had big plans for his Evo? Lets be realistic here for second most if not everybody who owns an Evo modifys it. The simple fact he has changed the clutch and has a accessport says it all, its been modified its an 08 and we are now in 2014. Im not saying thats a bad thing when i bought mine i wish it had came with all the bolt ons and a tune but something doesnt fly right when it seems like he is lying. Launching your car will kill the clutch just saying.
