dd'ng vs buying a beater
I just personally wouldn't add any financial burden if I were u.
My 2 cents.
GL with whatever u are doing.
i guess depreciation is a little of it, i almost never see another evo on the street whereas you see wrx/sti's all day long. and now that production stopped, our cars are even more rare.
yea to me fuel economy has nothing to do with it either i could care less about it. I just got a dd to eat up the miles. And i like to keep the value of the car up as well and i like to track it so i dont like getting multiple alignments and stuff either.
I say get a dd. I bought a buddies jetta for $500 bucks and put another 400 into it. Now the thing runs like a champ and im not going to lie its so nice to have a soft smooth tranny for dding. unlike the evo, especially in traffic. And everytime I do decide to ride the evo im like hell yah this thing is a monster. I am planning to sell the jetta here soon and maybe get a old fx35.
I drove my evo to my last job 5x a week for about 3.75 years @ ~90 miles per day. If I could do it again, I might have considered a beater. That being said, the only issue that I've had with the car was that the AWC pump went out (which seems to be more a function of driving on salt covered roads and in cold temps). It has 112k miles on it and going strong. Will be swapping the turbo for a MHI 18k that I picked up a while ago before spring. Plan to keep it as a second car / track car until it gets prohibitively expensive.
Edit: I would like to have a well maintained but otherwise POS car to drive into the city and whatnot... something that I didn't care what happened to it while parked.

I'm in the same situation as you. I drive 50 miles round trip for school and then I work on the weekends. It sucks *** seeing how fast my mileage goes up, but there are a lot of costs associated with buying a beater.
First of all you've got the added insurance, registration, and inspection right off the bat. Then you've got the normal maintenance like oil change, tires, etc and putting gas in 2 cars. Most importantly of all, you never know what's going to happen with a car that you buy for only 2 or 3 thousand dollars. It could run fine one day and the engine locks up tomorrow cause the owner never took care of it. Now you've got a couple thousand dollar lawn ornament that you don't want to dump any money into fixing because its a POS anyway.
Another disadvantage is you will ALWAYS be in the wrong car at the wrong time. I used to have a lifted diesel truck with a Jetta for a dd. Literally every time I saw another truck that I wanted to mess with (it was pretty quick for being 7000 lbs) I would be in the Jetta, and when I drove the truck I wouldn't see anyone.
Finally, if you spend a couple grand on a beater, just think of all the stuff you could buy for your Evo instead with that money. It really only makes sense if you're the type of person that is super **** about your car and just HAS to keep the miles low. Financially a beater will rarely make sense, especially when you can already get 22+ mpg out of an Evo driving it responsibly.

As stated by -the majority get a beater. It def. worth paying insurance for two cars if you aren't using the evo. I however believe you should driver the evo at least once every other week.
Do people really buy Evos as cars that they drive once every few weeks? I don't see the point.
i drive mine all the time in the summer but on days we have a chance of hail or snow or there putting salt down because of very cold temps here in Missouri i take my beater. And the insurance for my dd is only like 80 buxs for a full 6 months so the insurance side of things is a moot point.
Yeah, drive it daily. Who gives a **** if you put miles on it. Its a car thats what it is made for. That is also why they make new cars.
Good idea, I'm gonna store my mass production Mitsubishi lol. Makes no sense.

lmao I know right. It's ridiculous that I have 50k miles on my car and it's considered "high mileage" for an evo by most people.
It's not a misconception, most performance cars have seen a ton of abuse at 50k and therefore their value suffers as a result.
It's completely different for those that keep their cars for years and years, mileage is not as big an issue. For those of us that switch them frequently, no need taking the value down needlessly when you have other vehicles.
