Do your serpentine belt recall! Or this will happen
Do your serpentine belt recall! Or this will happen
Okay guys. Make the time, go in, and get your pulleys and belt recall done.
I was driving to a site at work and first I hear what sounds like rocks being kicked up in the right front wheel well. I thought nothing of this as it is winter and there are rocks EVERYWHERE. But about 10sec after that my battery light pops on. I have needed a new battery for a while and I thought it finally gave out but little did I know that was only the beginning.
I was on a long straight of highway at the time so while my battery was dying I was trying to turn off everything I could, headlights, stereo ect. to try and limp back to the office. Meanwhile a slew of CELs were going off. I think literally every single one that the car has was rambling off. I tried to find a pull off to stop as soon as I could but its a pretty rural area and there was snow packed to the very edge of the road so If I stop, its in the middle of the one lane highway. There was a slight bend in the road and that's when I realized my power steering was gone and also realized it was my serpentine belt. After only about 1.5mi from the battery warning, I saw a turn off ahead and figured I would turn off there. Finally my battery said NO MORE! and I lost power and stalled. I only barely made it to the turn off but at least I wasn't in the road.
I figured it was the serpentine belt, but I failed to remember the other systems that are attached other than alternator and Power steering. I think it may have gotten a little hot. My coolant was already low but when I popped the hood there was none in the res.
I called road side service and got it flatbeded to Mitsu where I wait to hear back this morning on if it qualifies for the recall and I can get this tow bill covered.

There was a post about it a while back but it seems this is text book recall.
I think it applies to 08-11 Lancer and Evo. Also some other Mitsubishi cars and SUVs.

The recall is an inspection. Of the pulleys and if they are within spec, they replace the serpentine belt. If pulleys measure out out of spec, new pulleys and new belt. I work as a service advisor for vw. We have a mitsubishi dealer in our auto group. The problem is that mitsubishi didn't account for the amount of pulleys that were going to need to be replaced and are now on back order. I can't even get my recall done and I am starting to have issues with the belt starting to make noises.
For any Evo owners in NZ reading this; currently there has been is no recall by MMNZ. I did a check through the Mitsubishi motors Japan website and found that my chassis number was one of the affected; I raised this with MMNZ a couple of days ago and was told that they are still awaiting the final chassis numbers to be released to them from Mitsubishi in Japan (which may include the NZ new Evo X's) once they have that list, MMNZ needs to submit that to the LTSA who will confirm the owners names and addresses of the recall, once that's then been completed each owner will be notified. MMNZ expects to have this recall issued within the first half of this year for affected NZ owners.

For all you reading as well, the battery light will typically only turn on when the entire system voltage is under a certain level, meaning even if you have a bad battery (or even no battery at all), the battery light will likely remain off. The light coming on is a fairly certain sign you've got an issue with an alternator, or in this case, nothing turning it. In terms of the coolant reservoir, that's only an overflow tank, your coolant is probably still at an okay level in the actual engine and radiator. But nevertheless I would make sure to keep that reservoir at the right level, as it will keep your coolant at a maximum level.
Still waiting on Mitsu. They said they don't do rentals for this kind of thing. I can only borrow a car for the rest of the day so I may have to rent a car myself. They also tried to tell me they need to charge me for a new belt and labor to get me on the road. I reminded them that this is most likely a recall issue that I don't get charged for and that can be easily checked in a few short minutes. They haven't even looked at the thing and I'm here without a car. So frustrating.
Hope everything works out for you. Sorry to see that you ran into this issue. BTW for those of us that purchased our Evo used, is there a website by vin number that would identify any recalls that have already been addressed, or will I have to go to a stealership?
