Any ex Subaru owners here? Would love some advice!
Best reply EVER. Thanks for all the info! I hate to mention this but i'm actually contemplating a 2015 VW GTI with PP package now too lol. I made the mistake of letting the sales guy at carmax talk me into driving a 2015 GTI with DSG they had on the lot and I have to admit the car is a lot of fun. I'm definitely going with SST if I go the evo route. I think i've just gotten lazy over the years driving manual day in and day out. I hate it for daily but love it in the canyons and on the track. I might just flip a coin and see how it lands to decide between the two now.
If you want a utility car, get a GTI. Ask Noize what he thought when he went to Evo -> GTI. Long story short, he hated it and went back to an Evo. Nice interior and a bit more room, then by all means, go for the GTI. But one of your chief complaints here is handling, which the GTI does not excel at.
Do you have a link to that 14' MR you found for 31k with only 10 miles on it? By the way Evo MR is awesome car even in stock form. I would highly recommend it to anyone! I love it so much I'm contemplating trading my 11' MR for a brand new one. I live on the east coast & all the brand new MR's i've been finding here are 40k+
I have had a 2012 WRX Sedan and a 2013 Sti Sedan, got my Evo X last year and let me tell you it isn't even a debate how much better the Evo is. Like the guys in the previous post said, it handles better, feels more powerful, and has much more potential for modifications if that is a route you are planning on
I totally agree. I've had 3 Subbys. (02 WRX, 05 STI, 08 WRX) and now that i have a 2014 Evo GSR, it's like a complete night and day difference. The handling is tight and responsive. The power is completely sound even left at a stock level. I was always a Subby guy all the way and I swore by it but I strongly believe that the difference is evident. However, I've never driven the new 2015 STI...
I've owned 4 STI's and a WRX. I have also owned 2 EVO MR's. The EVO is simply a better car. The MR is great in traffic and the gearbox is insanely good. If you mod above about 450hp, I wouldn't get an MR without significant transmission reinforcements. My favorite STI was the 2004. But even with that car, it doesn't hold a candle to the EVO. Cars have all been the same as far as reliable. All bullet-proof. You will enjoy the EVO more though. It is just a better car.
Wow, didn't know VW GTI are that awesome :)
As to your questions, and coming from a former 2005 STi owner:
How is the Evo X MR or GSR as a daily?
- MR all the way, especially if you are constantly stuck in rush hour traffic.
Is the Evo X more satisfying out of the box or lightly modded than a WRX/STi?
- Both of my cars were bought used. The STi came stock outside of a carbon fiber hood. As to the EVO, previous owner made adjustments to the suspension system with modifications such as rear sway bar, Swift spec R springs and rear-end links. Both cars are equally satisfying.
How is the build quality vs WRX/STi?
- Build quality are equally nice between the two manufactures.
Are you happy with the switch from Subaru to Mitsubishi?
- I’m quite happy from the switch. And years from now, I’ll be switching again. Heck, I enjoy fine automobiles and it’s important to try all types.
How reliable has the car been compared to your last Suby?
- Both have been equal in terms of reliability. With proper maintenance and minimal abuse, I’ve had (knock on wood) nearly no mechanical issues with either manufactures. Of course, ADC pump failure is so systemic,it’s not worth counting. Further, I go through a car every 2-4 years, thus will typically not face issues associated with an aged vehicle.

STi
I just went and looked at a well optioned STi and while impressive I wouldn't say its worth 36,000 msrp.
It had heated seats, backup cam, and other things that are nice. But regardless of what anyone says I just don't see the STi as equal to the Evo VIII, IX, or X. I don't think its going to be equal to the Ford RS either.
If they were selling it for around 29,000 and it was a hatch I'd seriously consider it.
I cant speak for the newer WRX or STi as far as performance but I can tell you when I was test driving everything in 2009 (I bought a 2008 GSR that had been sitting when the economy was bad) nothing compared to the Evo X.
I know a lot of subie guys since I'd been a part of that community for years, and nothing subie makes compares to the build potential Evos have. The inline 4 banger is simply more stout, totally buildable, and easy to work on and maintain in comparison.
And the Evos steering rack is pure bliss.
Best of luck whichever direction you go. BTW I like the 5sp MT and I've DD mine for 6 years. I do wish it was a 6sp but oh well.....I really havent minded much and I've driven mine to TX, CA, FL and KY repeatedly -

thats funny you say that. Since I have gotten my X I have noticed something weird that hasn't happened to me in owning other brands. Almost every X driver throws some sort of recognition my way. Manual drivers do, MR guys never do. IX guys never do. Shoot, even Subaru guys sometimes throw acknowledge my way. A couple of X owners don't acknowledge but try to race, which makes no sense to me.

WRX guys always catch up to me and give the car a look but without the wing and debadged I'm not much to look at haha
I get acknowledged by X owners as well most of the time. Sometimes not. VIII and XI guys will if I give them a wave of thumbs up but its like those cars are a different group.
