EVO X GSR - Boost Issues? Would LOVE some help!

Hi Everyone!

This is my first post ever, if I'm violating any forum rules or putting something in the wrong spot, already terribly sorry for that : /.

Anyhow, I finally snapped and bought a slightly used 2014 GSR. 22k miles on the ODO and the car is absolutely bone stock. Looked it over real good, drove it for maybe 10 miles in all sorts of conditions, speeds, RPM, etc before buying, no clutch slip. The guy who had it before kept it in his garage and babied it so I'm super lucky. I've had the car for about 2 weeks.

However, there's one issue I am noticing. Lately, I've noticed decreased boost and its actually been getting less powerful by the day. Sometimes in 3rd gear under WOT when the car is just warmed up I can get that feisty pull from 3k to 4-5k, but most of the time I don't have boost or even feel/hear the turbo anymore. The mind-blowing part though is the car is still quick especially at higher speeds, but not as quick as before. If I come off the gas completely in the 3-6k range I feel like theres some sort of kickback pressure in the vacuum line and car bucks for a quick second. I've driven and been around many Xs so I know how they behave for the most part. I've checked all over for boost leaks using a tester, soapy water, checking the UICP and hoses, can't find the damn thing.

I'm pretty desperate to find the cause of this problem and get that absolutely addictive boost back. Been following this forum forever, would love some awesome expertise or help from the crew here!

I know this might sound ridiculous but when was the last oil change. I notice my evo will start to feel a little sluggish when it's close to changing the oil.

Did the last one about 1500 miles ago, so not entirely sure that could be it. Worth a shot changing it though. It was done by the last owner and I put synthetic in all my cars so whatever is in there could be conventional.

Do a boost leak test. Also, put a new fuel relay in.

Oil won't change performance, if it got to that point, you would need a new motor.

Did a boost leak test up 15 psi, couldn't find a damn thing. Car still has a year factory on it and since its stock (for now at least ) maybe I'll just bring it over to Mitsu and see if they can figure it out. If its the fuel relay, I'll have em change it out.

Any idea why you'd think the turbo would spool and pull fine when the engine is cool or still warming up? Noticed that this morning. I know that's not a great thing to do, but still interesting.

Do you have a boost gauge installed? Or have you logged? I'm curious to see what your boost is looking like.

I haven't installed a boost gauge yet. I want to but figured since its under warranty mitsu wouldn't like to see that I snipped a vacuum hose to get that situated lol. I'm starting to feel like the warranty is actually more of hindrance than a benefit on these cars....

What's the best way to log results? Again, just got the car so pretty noobish hehe .

A vacuum line shouldn't be an issue. You can always call to see what is safe regards to the warranty.

In order to log, you would need either an Cobb Accessport, or Tactrix OpenPort 2.0. Its highly recommended that you have the ability to monitor your boost and your air fuel ratios.

When I bought the car from the dealer, the service guy told me his dealer isn't cool with mods, but for bolt-ons he said I can go to another one not far from me that literally sells modded evos with warranties intact. Nice to know that I guess but of course I'll give em a ring.

Yeah certainly one of the first things I'd like to do with the intake, exhaust, tune, and fuel pump is to get a wideband and boost gauge situated. Thanks

I'd save your money on the fuel pump. The factory one is good for full boltons! Just make sure when you get the parts installed you take it easy until its tuned

See this is why I'm glad I joined the forums haha. The more you know! My buddy is doing an S13 240SX build and is like "fuel pump, big upgrade, gotta do it!".....and I was somewhat doubtful on that for the EVO.

I think if one day this becomes track worthy ill do the pump and bigger injectors. Sometimes my mind gets a little bigger than my wallet for this car haha.
