Worth a shot/ Help
I hope this doesn't come off the wrong way, because this is a nightmare situation for any enthusiast, but I think this will be a chance for people to learn an important lesson.
Modifying is generally on you. A reputable shop should be willing to help, but at the end of the day it was your car and you took the risk. Now if they defrauded you or performed shoddy work it is different, but I doubt you would be able to prove that. Even good shops can build motors that blow.
It is not financially a good idea to dump all of your savings into tuning, even if it is your dream. Only after all major debt is gone, you are saving well for retirement, children's college tuition, rainy day fund, etc. should you undertake an expensive engine build.
In my opinion, you should be mentally prepared to lose the car when you start modding. The more you do the greater the risk. I don't think a gofundme is the right thing to do. You may get some generous people in here, but I think you should take this opportunity to revaluate your priorities.
Also "We can't sell it, because we owe more than its worth". You should never build a motor on a car that you still have a loan on. You would have been better off putting the $6-7k towards the car loan. Also that sounds fairly cheap for a motor build.
I hope it all works out for you, you look like you have a nice family. I really hope I didn't come off as rude, just need to give some tough love. Hopefully others can see the risks and not make the same mistakes. Best of luck.

^ exactly right. I spent almost 3 years Building my evo just perfect. I didn't want a penny on it loaned. so that if anything ever happened one day similar to this I won't owe anything. I would simply save up for a new motor. no loss no gain. however 6-7k doesn't sound significant. most major engine builds cost between 15-25k.
not a personal attack op, just common knowledge. cars like ours, especially building/modifying them is a luxury, not a necessity and you better be financially ready to lose it all.

"Literally ALL of our money, blood sweat, tears, heart & passion has gone into this car." Wow. Why would you do that, with a wife and kid? Part it out and sell it and move on. Dumping more money you don't have into it doesn't sound very smart.

in your gofundme you said you sold everything you could and even took out a small loan? if you're im that kind of a financial crisis you would be better off with a 2k beater car untill your more financially secured.. like the guys above stated, im not trying to be rude, just trying to digest what you're saying.. its not going down easily. goodluck man
Ugh I hate these moments but... the world doesn't owe you anything.
Man up and take responsibility. Crap situation but life is life.
I say sell the car, get some cheap transportation and move on.

See that picture with the cute little kid look thats what you should be focused on.
I'm pretty sure majority of the members in this forum would have similar comments regarding this situation. Modding your car to your heart's content is one thing but living beyond your means is another. Lessons in life. Sell all the mods in the car, even better, sell the entire thing. Then start paying the loans and have a fresh start. I'm sure, your son would appreciate this in the future by setting a good example. Good luck!
