Need advice
You can get an online quote from almost any insurance provider. Go there, enter your info, get a quote and decide for yourself what you can or can't afford, a tuner forum is a **** place to find financial advice. When you are doing your math make sure you factor in maintenance costs as well.
As for what to expect on your quote, just make sure you are sitting down.

Guys, this is no BS.. Back in 2005 i bought my 2004 Evo x and Gieco, Progressive, farmers, Esurance ALL quoted me at $650+ a month. That was in 2005 when i first got the Evo 8 and i was 20 years old with a CLEAN driving record. I paid that price for 6 months with farmers (Before they checked credit for insurance) and realized i can not afford it. So i called state farm and they quoted me a lot lower.. like $350 a month and it SLOWLY kept going down until i hit 25 years old and it flew down around $150/mo. Then i got a running a red light, speeding ticket (38 in a 30mph zone) and got a careless driving. Bought a evo x and a motorcycle and i now pay $70/mo for the Evo X full coverage with that stuff still on my record.
So yes... i do believe the $600 a month premium exists in this 30k+ car.

But the issue is when people like the OP, who is 17, want to get into an evo. They have almost nothing of a driving record and probably no credit, unless they piggyback off a parent's credit card. So the insurance company will see them as a high-risk unknown and charge a lot. It's not about shopping elsewhere, it's about building a good record and good credit with a cheap car before buying a nice one.

The shopping elsewhere comment was directed at you.
If you had your own policy at 20 with a perfect driving record and decent credit, $650 a month was flat out ludicrous, so yes you should have shopped elsewhere. The fact that you paid that stupid amount for 6 months is just being young and making a mistake, nothing more.
But to your point premiums dropping slightly at 25 this is true for most insurance companies. The fact that you have over paid for car insurance in the past has nothing to do with this kid and his premiums.
Seeing as how the OP never jumped back on here, I am assuming his mom and dad told him "hell no" to the car anyway.
I have been driving (Legally) for about a year in a 99 Ford explorer with a clean record. I have no clue what my credit is and my father has refused to sign a co-title simply because it is a Jap car. Also I see that you guys have been saying that once I get the car that I will be whipping it around and racing everywhere and this is not the case I've grown up in the SCCA community and would like to begin racing (on track) and this is my car of choice. I have found a 2008 that has suspension mods on it (but possibly EBay parts) that is any about 18,500 and I have yet to speak with any insurance companies to get a quote. Also with the car being 18,500 I would be paying up front with my mom spotting me on half as she would most likely be racing with me so I would not need to worry about car payments just a bit worried on the insurance. It would be a while before any heavy mods go into the vehicle so that I have time to settle and get used to paying what ever it is that I'd be paying a month so I can budget and save for Performance parts
