Timing Chain and Water Pump Replacement Costs

Dear Forum Members,

I just hit 60,000 miles on my 2010 Evo X and took it in for the 60,000 service. They did the service including replacing the drive-belt and other belts. They inspected the timing chain and the water pump and seals and said everything looked really good. I'm hoping to get another 2 yrs or 20,000 miles in this car before I NEED to really consider changing the water pump and timing chain. On previous cars that I've owned that had timing BELTS, it was recommended that you replace the water pump at the same time as the timing belt because the labor involved was not that much higher. The Mitsubishi dealership quoted me $800 to replace the water pump whenever that time rolls around.
Does that seem like a fair price? Have any of you had your water pump and/or timing chain replaced and if so, how much did you pay for this service?

Thank You,

Lando

If it makes you feel any better, I had 140k miles on my original 2008 water pump and chain. The chain should have a fair bit more life than 60-80k in it. And the water pump is easy to replace. Unlike a timing belt engine which has the pump hidden behind the timing belt (which requires the belt to come off for replacement, like say the 4G63) the 4B11's water pump is just on the back of the block. Accessory belt comes off in a few minutes, and the pump is easily accessible from there. $800 seems crazy for the pump & labour....

The timing chain doesnt need replacement. Unless it stretches or breaks which is un common.i believe the years that prone to strtech was like 08. Water pump can be left untill if ever it leaks.

Or if you have cold start rattle can pottentially be timing tensioner and or cvvt assemblies. But again if it aint broke dont fix it.

Thank you guys for the replies. My wife had a Scion TC with a timing chain and I never heard anything about "possibly" replacing it until she hit around 100K on the odometer. I was a bit skeptical when the guy told me $800 because I've seen OEM water pumps from $275 - $315 and aftermarket ones for cheaper than that. So glad I have a mechanic who allows me to bring my own parts.

Man the 2010 and under 2012 had a timing chain that was prone to stretching. I'd replace that FOR SURE on a 2010 no question. Why risk it? They changed out / revised the timing chain for a reason. The new one is MUCH stronger than the one he is running.

Replace the timing chain, fixing what breaks if that goes is much more costly.

I believe you are correct, I had it stuck in my head it was 2012 that change happened, but looks like 2010 had the 'improved one'

Good example of the differences I found -
