Isn't there a break-in procedure in your manual? By the way I didn't last 100 miles on my IX when I bought it before I beat on it and I never had a problem.

You'll definately get varying answers....some say it's a must and others will say it doesn't matter. Some will say change your oil after 1500 miles and others will tell you it doesn't matter. It's all up to you my friend. Nice choice by the way.

The above poster is correct. I have always been of the persuasion that you break it in like it will be driven. So I have always driven my cars decently hard from the get go and I have never had a problem.

Just drive the **** out of it, if it is well put together it will break in perfectly, if not blow it up now so you can warranty it

agreed with all posters here, when I got my car within the first half hour of driving I had practically went against every recommendation they had stated in the manual (it's one of the first few pages FYI), except the towing thing and a few other ones. No problems yet (other than infamous CEL light that many X owners have probably experienced).

Oh and when u get the CEL, just take it to Mitsu, they'll reset and/or update software for you for free as it's a well known problem, or at least in Canada it is, don't know if you guys in the states have the same problem.

and to answer your question specifically:

a break-in period is a recommended period measured in distance travelled, where you are asked to follow certain recommendations to get all the components working properly in a safe fashion.

As mentioned before it is only a recommendation and you'll get varying answers depending on who you ask

try not to keep the rpms the same for a long period (vary the throttl, shift, ect). Try not to go above 4k for the first 3-4 hundered miles, then for the rest (up to 1000-1500 miles) vary the rpms more then usuall-and change the oil at the 1500 mark. Should be good to go. DD for you, or track car?

Owners manual says don't go over 5K RPM for 600 miles I believe.

Whats the mileage? Most critical part (in terms of ring seal) is the first 20 miles. If it's already past that then I don't think it will matter what you do.

Consensus I have found is that you want to use regular oil (not synthetic) then heat cycle the engine with one good pull on each cycle. That is to say:
1. let it warm up to temp on first start up, shut it down, check all fluids and for leaks
2. First drive, fully up to temp, give it one good low boost pull followed by in gear coast down (pulling full vacuum helps keep the cylinder walls clean) then shut it down and let it cool all the way to ambient temp.
3. Repeat the process with a little more load and more revs
4. Repeat the process with a little more load and more revs

Once you get to the point of a "full pull" your pretty much done, drain the oil and replace with synthetics and call it done.

Hudson is right, <5k rpm for 600 miles and vary your RPM's

I am breaking in mine now and i hate keeping my foot out of it. Only 400miles left to go....

196 on tap now. haven't driven it in 3 days. It sucks to drive the X in 20 minutes bumper to bumper traffic to work every morning. Sticking wit the 94 accord LX 5-Speed more suitable and economical. Will be taking a road trip to Ohio this Thanksgiving. In the mean time will try and keep a light foot. Thanx for the info

The whole point of break in is seal the pistons to the cylinder walls. I've read giving it a couple blasts from the get-go works pretty well.

This is a pretty good write up if you want it all spelled out for you.
