Rear Bumper Removal (How-To)

Text only for now, sorry.

I'll go in 3 sections, wheel well L, wheel well R, Rear bumper

Wheel Well L (Facing rear)
1) In the wheel well there is 1 screw (phillips) where the rear bumper meets the body frame
2) There are 2 plastic pop rivets in the rear of the weel well. Applying a flat-head under the head of the center piece and pushing up will release. Be sure to remove both parts (the inner screw, and outter nut). From here, you will need to look under the car
3) While looking underneath the bumper behind the left wheel well, you will see 2 more pop rivets, follow the rear air diffuser and you will see the black circle.. the other is farther back, towards the bumper. You can access both without raising the car.

For the right wheel well, follow the same steps as the left, however you will only have 1 pop rivet for step 3 (iirc)

From the rear bumper itself
1) Remove the bolt in the center of the license plate holder
2) Underneath the bumper, to the insides and immediately to the sides of the exhaust pipes are 2 more pop rivets. From the back of the plate holder, you will see 2 arms reaching toward the body, they will have the pop rivets in them into the body.

Once all rivets (4 left, 2 center, 3 right), and all bolts/screws (1 left, 1 center, 1 right) are removed, you can start pulling the bumper off.

At the wheel wells, the very corner will need to be tilted down and back to clear the screw hole, once clear, pull back gently but firmly. You will hear some painful popping as the bumper clears the snaps on the body. Continue untill you finish one side, then do the other. I found it easier to do the sides, then move towards the middle.. the middle is simply resting on the rear bumper support.

Once the bumper is off, you also have access to remove the rear reflectors. It's 2 phillips screws in the back.. nothing more. (What a pain..)

Good luck!

(I will try posting pictures as soon as I can.. sorry!)

Thanks buddy, I just got my smoked markers and ran into this after realizing that you can't get to them from the trunk.

I can testify to the accuracy of these instructions. However, one thing I would like to point out/correct is that the middle of the bumper is more than just resting on the rear bumper beam. There are 4 little clips that are molded into the bumper the barely clip into a flimpsy sheet metal piece on top of the rear bumper beam.

Sorry, I forgot to snap some pictures. I have no real need to remove the bumper again - but if I do, I will take pictures.

Sorry about that. When I had undone all the pop rivets and other misc. connectors, then moved to pulling the bumper off, there were the snaps all around the sides of the wheel wells.. Once those were pulled lose, the entire bumper just pulled backwards from the center. I never felt it pop off/pop back in.

There are some bolt/screw locations that "hide" better to have a guide that says "you got it all!" instead of scratching your head wondering if you're missing something..

Do you have the same rear bumper as Canadian models? I know they have an extra extended bumper.

Does anyone know if the extra piece on the bumper for Canadian models are just stuck on with tape or is there something else holding it onto the bumper. Has anyone taken it off before?
