That looks so easy. All brakes should be made like that.

nice find and thx for sharing but just to add in, it would be much easier if u steer out which will give you more work space.

dont just hammer or clamp direct onto calipers as you might destroy or chip the paint , place a piece of cloth on top the hammer/clamp.

you might also want to open the refiller cap before clamping on the pads and have some rags around it.

use more brake grease if possible.

Yeah, plus most people changing pads have added fluid to the reservoir to make up for the pad loss. When you compress the piston like that, all the fluid goes back into the reservoir, and can spill over.

However, I'm glad to see it's so simple. Makes me want to change my pads now!

Sorry for bumping such an old thread, but I'm a noob. I need to replace my pads.

Can you guys recommend the replacement pads to get for a stock 08 MR?

How do I protect myself against the fluid going back into the reservoir? I want to learn how to do this and do it properly.. never done it before.

Thanks guys.

Nkon,

Nice to see another 08 MR owner You can prevent the brake fluid from going back into the reservoir by what Red08Evo was talking about. He said when you compress the brake pads, you should open the bleeder screw on the caliper so the fluid doesn't go backwards through the system (what you see him doing with the channel lock pliers). I personally never do this, but it is a great idea. Make sure to add brake fluid if you need it after doing this. Also make sure you close the bleeder screw.

As for pads, I have not replaced the pads in my 08 MR, but when I had my eclipse, I used to use Hawk HPS pads. They were pretty reasonable for price, and worked well.

However, if you go to the AMS performance site, they say that there test driver preferred the Performance Friction pads over the Hawk HPS's (link below).

What are others thoughts on the Performance Friction Metallic Z pads?

Also,

Just checked the price of the Hawk HPS, and they are about the same/a little more expensive than the Performance Friction pads from AMS. That being said, I would stick with what AMS suggests. They have much, much more experience and knowledge on this subject than I do .

Hey thanks a lot! This post was so helpful. I love this forum because of the maturity of the members. I've been a member on ClubRSX forever and we never had members this nice and helpful.

I'm happy to be a new part of the family here

No one has said this yet (that I've seen), but you'll want to make sure NOT to get that fluid on your caliper (or anything else for that matter)...

What you'll need is an empty coke bottle (think 20 ounce not a 2 liter) and some clear tubing (that semi stretchy plastic)...

The piping needs to be large enough that you can fit it snugly over the nipples of the bleeder valves...

Drill a hole in the cap of the empty bottle and feed the tube in there,

Before you open each valve put the tube over it, then compress the pad/piston...

The break fluid will go into the tube and eventually the coke bottle...

It's cheap and it works...

Cheers,

~Mike

Nkon,

No problem, glad to help . 99% of the people on this forum are really cool and helpful (you always have a few bad apples anywhere you go but whatever). So feel free to ask any question, it is the only way you will learn. Also, listen to what Mike posted, he is 100% correct, I used that method when I put new calipers on my Eclipse.

Agreed. Best to crack the bleeder nipple(s) and allow the fluid to bleed out through the nipple when forcing the piston back into its bore instead of forcing the fluid back through the system (less chance of damaging the bore and the seals inside). Usually bleeding your brakes goes hand in hand with a pad swap anyhow, so why not just do it @ the same time.

Great video none the less.
