My take on the Carbing ACD/AYC Guard install

My take on the Carbing ACD/AYC Guard install, and corrosion protection.

I live in MD, so our climate is somewhat mild (no big extremes one way or the other) however we do get a good amount of snow, and they overuse salt here. The car is new (since Jan 14), but I didn’t want to gamble and do nothing in hopes the pump would fail before the warranty was up.
I purchased the Carbing ACD Guard Part number 28 329 0 from Japanparts. They had the best price if you don’t mind the slow shipping.

My Tool/Supply List

2X M8 - 1.25x45MM Bolts (see pic)
Bag of washers for said bolts
Ratchet, sockets, standard hand tools, jack, stands, drill, etc
Marson 39000 Hand Riveter (check Amazon)
3/16 by 3/8 Rivets
3/8 drill bit
1/8 ABS sheet from TAP plastics (I ordered 24"x24" and have a lot extra, you could do it with half easy)
Dremel tool with cutting wheel
Bench Grinder
Heat gun
Rust-Oleum 7701830 Stops Rust Clear
Rust-Oleum 7776830 Stops Rust Black
3M 08883 Rubberized Undercoating

Here are some before photos so you can see how much area is exposed without taking a wheel off.

While I had it exposed, I painted the pump with a coat of Rust-Oleum 7776830 Stops Rust Black, then a good coat of 3M 08883 Rubberized Undercoating. I'm not sure how hot this gets, but I don’t track the car, and I've been feeling the lines after long drives and they don’t feel hot. So I'm guessing this will be ok.

The Guard does take some cutting and trimming to get it to fit since this was obviously not made for the USDM model. The key element is the two lines that run under the pump. Not only do you have to cut the guard as pictured below, but you have to space it with some washers and longer bolts so it sits lower than intended to not be up against the lines. You may be able to bend the lines or work something out. I left the lines on their OEM mount point. To do so means you have to trim along the edge of it so it fits with your diffuser. Since it was meant to fit sunk in and not flush. Note the extra cutting if you have mud flaps.

Spacing
I used washers from the hardware store and a couple thick aluminum ones I had from another project (I didn’t buy enough regular washers). You have to space the one closest to the front of the car more than the rear due to how it is mounted.

Once the guard is installed, there is still a good gap.

So with some trial and error I fit a nice piece of ABS plastic up there. I ended up having to cut three different pieces to finally get it dialed in. This plastic can be bent using a heat gun, so you can really mold it nice. Notice in the below photo to the right of the rivet in the center of the photo there is a slot cut in the ABS, this is what I used to really get the fitment adjusted on. You drill the two holes with a 3/8 drill bit and make sure the rivets are seated all the way, then pop them in. Behind where the rivets are you can get your hand it’s a thinner piece of sheet metal, so it's perfect to get them set in. I then did two rivets on the guard itself. You use a heat gun and get it all sitting flush before you rivet in it. I coated anything I drilled, and all the lines, etc, with some Rust-Oleum 7701830 Stops Rust Clear

Excellent write up! Thanks for doing it.

My thoughts:
It will deflect most spray away from the pump (a good thing).
However, it is not air-tight - so you can reasonably assume it will still get saltwater soaked.
The spray paint and rubberized coating (if performed before corrosion takes hold) will be the most effective defense.

Can you still water-wash rinse the pump real good (with the shield on)? This has been my (only) defense.

I cant imagine it would get soaked, but it will probably get a small amount of spray, MUCH less than when the liner was wide open though.

Taking off the two plastic nuts on the fender liner, one could pull it out and water wash it pretty easy. I'll do that during the winter when we get the warm spikes and I can wash the car, it wouldn't be hard to jack that corner up, zip the lugs off, open the liner, and spray it out.

I unbolted it from the housing it sits in, pulled it out as far as I could with the lines attached, and sprayed it down. I didn't cover anything, but tried to not spray directly on the connectors.

Just to clarify, you sprayed all these on the pump itself right?

Rust-Oleum 7701830 Stops Rust Clear
Rust-Oleum 7776830 Stops Rust Black
3M 08883 Rubberized Undercoating

I did a coat of black on the pump, let it dry, then did a coat of 3m.
I used the clear for the hardware and lines around the pump and where I drilled for the rivets. You could use the black, I just did clear so nothing looked different.

Thanks to your write-up, I did my installation. Instead of washers I have used rubber/ metal bushing. On the cut edge I have sllided in some rubber hose cut in half, silicone makes it stay there. Hope it will protect my pump as it is still in great shape

after 12 years .
