Gauge and Headunit Install
Hey all,
I finished my installation of my gauges yesterday. I had installed the dash kit (with major modifications) with my headunit some time ago, but didn't get gauges until this weekend. Now that I actually have gauges instead of gaping holes, I thought I'd post some pictures up. Note that the O2 sensor isn't installed into the exhaust stream yet, I'm waiting on a test pipe. It's just sitting in the passenger compartment for now. The serial output runs into the glove box for future logging purposes.
During normal driving, I tend to have the HU closed, so this is the normal look!

If a video is on, I can still see the boost gauge digital readout. It worked pretty well, actually.

I've had mixed opinions on whether people like it or not, but I love it. Please let me know if you can think of ways to improve it, or even why you don't like it.

^ That's the most common reason people are saying they dislike it.
It was a trade-off for me. I hate the flip-outs at the top, as the extend up and look awkward. With it in the lower portion, the open screen looks more central in the dash. So, to avoid this, I had to put it in the bottom! It's not for everyone, but it works for me. It would have been a hell of a lot easier to modify the dash kit to have the gauges on the bottom. I had to relocate the DIN slot to the bottom for my case.
I understand that some people don't like the flip out on the bottom. However, I don't drive with it open very often anyway, and certainly not when I'm driving in a manner where I'd like to keep an eye on the gauges.

I've had a few PMs regarding the dash kit modification. I haven't done a full writeup, but here's a link with a few pictures.

Basically, I used some excess plastic from the dash kit (it came with a "pocket" slot that you can throw your keys in or something) and plastic welded in some proper sized pipes. I don't have a HOWTO or anything, since I made it up as I went. Then just bondo, sand and paint.

As of now, I don't use the video too often. However, it is nice to have on occasion, especially for passengers on long, boring trips. My hometown is a three hour, straight, boring drive from where I live now, so I make the trip quite often.

Honestly, I couldn't tell you! I'm pretty sure it was just regular filler bondo. I just grabbed a little tube because I didn't need that much. Just to even out some edges. It was a true make it up as I go along project.

If anyone has speciic questions, I will try to help as best as I cab. However, my main advice is just go for it. The worst thing that can happen is you need to but another 30 buck dash kit.
