The camera is a Canon 50D. 1st pic is with a Canon 15mm f/2.8 and the last three are taken with the crappy kit Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.

It's not really the camera nor the lenses that make the pictures look like they do. 3 and 4 are one exposure while 1 and 2 are two exposures that I combined. I'll show you guys the two exposures. They don't align at all, which is why I ended up with like 30 layers in PS to make it look like one exposure.

end product

And once again, this is not HDR. It falls along the same idea of HDR, but it's not since HDR is achieved through merging bracketed photos with a program like CS4 or Photomatix (whatever it's called). I find HDR a bit too surreal looking in most cases.

I wouldn't say HDR is too surreal, just some..well A LOT of people overdo it.. HDR alone doesn't make a image look good anyhow, it's a great starting point tho. People just need to learn how to keep it at a minimal degree.

In the end, I would say you've to really find your own style, and I can't cosign you enough when you say it's not bout the camera or lenses (that's debatable). It's the POST, although some people can really nail it the first time to save a whole lot of time in POST.

Just shoot a really nice detailed and sharp picture..of course composition is the key here. Camera and lenses help, but people can get away with a lot less than they would think. Filters and lighting are a huge aid shooting outdoors too, but I'll keep it short.

nice pictures

Yup, the editing can make a good picture a great picture and a great picture an amazing picture.

But editing cannot save a crappy picture.

nice shots, the one with the 15mm is significantly better than the kit lense (no kidding eh?). If you dont have one i would highly suggest getting the 50mm 1.8 lense for like $50. Would make the low light shoots much better, either way killer job and great framing of the car with the sky and the background.

EDIT: Great job on the HDR, very tasteful I love HDR when used like you did, but loathe it in the cartoony style. To each their own though.

Only $50? Wow. I was planning on getting the Canon 85mm f/1.2 next and then the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8, but that's $3700 for the two. Is the 50mm you speak of Canon or aftermarket?
