Evo X Mirror modification :0)

Hi , this is a bit of a lazy copy and paste of the thread i posted on the MLR in the UK,
It may offer the some of you guys the option of more aesthetically pleasing sized mirror whilst still retaining actual function.(you should be able to find some on ebay, i know there were some Lancer (non evo ) models sold in the states, that you may be able to find at breakers yards or similar) though slightly bigger than the Evo 4/5/6 mirrors I have used, Evo 8/9 ones would no doubt be readily available for you guys, and still an improvement over the Laptop sized X ones.

I had a set of very nice M tech carbon ones on previously, (as seen in the pics on my other thread) but being honest, nice as they were they were a pain in the **** to actually see out of
So a bit of plotting later and this is what i came up with ......
(Excuse the crap pictures, weather shocking and used my phone too)

As any X owner will know , the standard Transit van sized mirrors are ridiculously HUGE, and look completely out of place:smthumbdo
Its annoyed me since i got the car, so after a bit of research ( well, a good look around under my bed :mhihi: where else would you keep a set of wing mirrors  ) i took apart the Evo VI mirrors i had left over from my RS2 i had a few years ago.
The mounting plinth that holds the actual mirror housing to the A pillar area of the X doors is obviously different on the 2 models, but the way the mirror housing attaches to the 2 is almost the same.
The cast metal base of the mirrror housing sits in a recess in the plinth, this amazingly is just the same size/depth on both cars, the only difference is the 3 threaded mounting holes are in a different position.
So scribe then drill 3 new holes, 5mm tap to thread them, and they bolt straight on.
The electrics, if you are not electrically challenged like me  would be splicable to give lens adjustment, but as i dont adjust it and its perfectly do-able manually i have not bothered.
Got them flatted off, sanded all the raised plastic moulding lines and mitsi writing off the housings, primed them up and then sprayed them a with textured plastic paint that makes them look just like the original RS plastic mirrors and matches the wing vents and J panels etc, perfectly :coolsm:
All in all, very easy mod, makes it look "Right" and gets rid of the Transit van shockers that Mitsi fitted it with.

Original VI mirror base re-drilled

Some mirror comparisons...

On the Car...Pictures crap as the light was Bizarrely yellowy/grey

Not really; it looks like there is now a large gap between the mirror and the frame.

Didn't say they were perfect dude
I much prefer a small gap increase to the hugely obvious small lorry sized original mirrors fitted.
Still looking at alternatives , always something to mess with.

Hey Licker: I totally agree with U...the OEM dumbo ears have got to go! Thanks for sharing UR attempts to do same. With these VI mirrors, is the left hand turn visibility improved? This is where I want to see some dramtic improvement.

Later, Ken

Rather try something myself before paying ££££ for someone else work, its part of the fun of owning something like this, being different is very difficult in a world of see it on a website, press a button , have it delivered to your door, very little is unique

Ken, i guess you mean my right hand turn visibility ?? as your steering wheel is on the wrong side compared to mine.
Dont know, as i have yet to drive the sodding thing as the weather is garbage at the mo it can only be better, though by how much i dont know yet, the line of site whilst turning or trying to clip an apex is as you say , shocking, even worse in mine as the RA seats drop me down a good couple of inches lower than the standard seats.
I am going to crash soon me thinks, spent the day shopping with the wife, most of the driving time was spent trying to get a look at mirrors on other cars, for possible bastardising of other brands offering

yes it kinda funny how they try to "save" weights , and spend ridiculous money on new materials and weight saving engineering.
Mean time they put a truck mirrors on the car... Sounds like the government in work.

Good find ,

ROb

Its by no means perfect, i am going to do a bit of fine tuning to get the gaps a bit tighter
Maybe trim back/reshape the lower part of the X base, as it is like a small fin that protrudes below the mirror housing.
I couldnt possibly paint them its an RS, they leave the factory with non painted mirrors, black door handles etc, the equivalent of getting a Ferrari 360CS without the " look at me, i've a CS and not just a normal 360" stripes front to back
Still plotting though, have bought a set of DTM mirrors to see if they can be adapted.............

Its not just the sheer bulk of the things, weight and size are ludicrous.
Its the line of sight that is blocked by them, for me, right turns, roundabouts etc, apexes are difficult to judge, you place the front wheel with a 2 foot blind spot, the same for you guys with left hand turns i guess.
Combined with a fat lower A pillar area, it has a big effect on the sighting of the road edge.
