Defi VSD-X Headup display w/ BF boost gauge install
Relatively non-complicated install.. just very time consuming running the wires through the firewall and to behind the dash. i had to take apart the entire dash.. to figure out where to run the wires... there is plenty of space behind the radio.. and luckily enough slack for the sensor wires to the control unit. i used ALfit aluminum sensor adapters which were really nice units. oil press/temp sits right above the oil filter. water temp sensor is on the upper radiator hose. boost i ran from underneath the engine cover.
Everything you need to know for the install comes with the Defi Control Unit II 2.0's instruction manual.... tap RPM off the ignition pulse signal from the ECU inside the engine bay harness. set to 1 cylinder operation on the manual toggle switches (we are CAN bus system...), and then during the heads up display setup, select 4 cylinder engine.
Speed signal, and light illumination, power, and ground for the control unit and vsd control unit all can be obtained from the Combination Meter's harness, directly behind the Tach/Speedo cluster. i opted to hard solder all the connections instead of using the tap-a-wire connectors that were included...
i installed my control boxes underneath the A/C controls, using the oem hole for the audio/ipod jack.
The VSD-X displays RPM, Speed, Oil Temp/Press, Water Temp, has a two stage RPM shift light, warning settings for all sensors... and if i do get my fuel pressure installed it'll display that and differential boost pressure since i have the boost gauge installed too..
Purpose of the heads up for me was:
1. combine all pertinent information all in one location (Oil Temp, Oil Pressure, Water Temp, Fuel Pressure) so i can easily see it, w/o having 5 gauges all over the car.. although i forgot to get the adapter to the fuel pressure sensor, so i have to install that next time..
2. I was so used to the heads up on my Z.. so i had to get it for the Evo.. ;P
very easy to see during bright sun light, the auto dimmer sensor is pretty good.
