Evo MR DRL HID install
Evo MR DRL HID install
Just a little project for Evo's with factory HID's. As you might or might not know the DRL bulb twists into a plastic base. This base isn't a standard headlight base size e.g 9005, 9006, H1, This meant I would have to make it fit somehow. So what I did was: 1.remove the DRL harness/ headlight back cover (the DRL harness passes thru a grommet in it) 2. gutted the DRL's plastic base of the harness and the metal piece that holds the bulb. 3. made a hole thru the plastic base to allow the HID bulb bottom to site in side it. 4. epoxy the HID bulb in the plastic base. 5.trim the HID bulb so it fits into the headlight housing. Also I ordered 4300k bulbs... found out they were 6000k after I was done. Well that was a little late since that epoxy isn't coming loose lol!
Now from the pics you can see I cut the HID bulb's harness to allow it to pass thru the bulb base and headlight covers grommet. I also used a relay to power the HID ballasts. I installed a switch to trip the relay and activate the DRL HID's. Light out put is good, I don't get people flashing me. So I don't think there's going to be an issue with the DRL's reflector light pattern.
The HID's bulb base is black. The plastic DRL base I modified is the grey plastic.

You can see where I cut the HID's wiring harness and passed it thru the plastic base and the headlights back cover and grommet.

You can see that there is enough room for the HID's bulb to fit in the DRL's reflector.

Just the DRL HID's turned on.

Factory HID's on, DRL HID's on and HID fogs.

Hmm i wonder now... so u added a relay to supply a power for the HID ballast for the DRL...
For non-SSS guys suffering a flickering DRL when they change the lowbeam/DRL to HID lights... can your relay/mod be a cure so that we would have both DRL and Lowbeam working even after putting a HID kit?

The beam pattern isn't blinding oncoming traffic. The way the reflector is it isn't shooting the beam very high. It acts more like a fog light does. I also have it wired to be independently operated. This lets me choose how much light I need.
