Bedding Procedure Hawk Pads

Did a quick search but my question was not answered.

Might be a stupid question, but I want to make sure beacause Ive never had Hawk pad's before and the bed-in procedure wording seems a little different than other pads Ive used.

It states to make several stops from 30-35 mph.

Now do they mean brake boosting or drive up to 35mph then slow down to 30mph. I'm confused because it's written backwards

it means to drive up to 30-35mph then stop. do this a few times but do not come to a complete stop .

so speed up to 35mph, the brake till ~1mph, repeat.

The pad bedding drill is different (slightly) depending on the compound of the pad..but the concept is the same. You need X amount of pad transfer to the rotors before the pads will work correctly. The pads compounds will need different Temps applied to them before the transfer takes place. Pete

I thought they say come to a complete stop? Not sure if the 1mph or the complete stop make a diference. I have cycled two sets of the Hawk pads on two different evo's, I came to a complete stop as I thought directed and no problems noticed. I did have some rail train noises for a little while after, so I went out and got them hot and did some high speed breaking until it cleared and never any issues thereafter.

Good Luck

Well stopping on hot brakes can leave marks or hot spots on them so keeping them moving, even 1 mph is a good idea until you cool off the brakes a bit following the bedding procedure.

Aren't you supposed to do some hard stops from 40-45 as well?

Yes you are but I want to get the gist of what they were describing, before I went any further.

Hawk Bed-in

The bedding procedure I used in this video will work for just about any organic, ceramic, or semi-metallic street or race pad (I was actually using Hawk HPS street pads in this video). The speeds and temps you'll need to hit will depend on the pad compound, but the basic premise is the same. Don't worry about being ultra precise about your speed, etc. Just do a number of stops to bring the pads up to a temperature at which they'll transfer to the rotor (again, that temperature for each compound will be different). Then do a number of stops to establish a transfer layer on the discs. Do not come to a complete stop or you could imprint the pad on the discs! That's it in a nutshell. The video and article answer a lot of the associated why's, how's and other assorted questions.

Good luck and be careful!
