Continental DWS first impression
I drive VERY careful in rain, sleet, and snow...i dont drive like it July and i consider myself an experience driver. I drive my X with the Snow setting on but still i get slippage with the tires...i've had Blizzaks on FWD cars that were GREAT...the DWS are GOOD. I find it hard to believe that you never ever once got the slip signal on your dash display with these tires...
I am not saying these tires are invincible in the snow, I am only saying for the money and the mileage warranty they are tough to beat. Yeah, if I get into it going around a corner with snow and ice, I get some slipping (my choice), but that is due to speed and throttle. I am simply overcoming the ability of the tire at that point.
I am well aware that dedicated winter tires are going to be better, but do I need tires to be better than the DWS, IMO NO, at least not for my area and conditions.
After driving thru the amount of snow i've seen this winter I feel like the couple people that say this tire is not great in the winter have some other agenda. Maybe they work for firestone or a retailer thathat doesn't carry conti. My last car was a toyota 4runner. An absolute beast in the snow. I live in Missouri -the show me state- these tires got me through everything this wintet without a single problem. How is it I can drive all winter, in blizzards, and feel like I have the traction of my 4runner and come here and read about people not liking this tire for winter use. I call bs
^
on the calling BS. I love my DWS tires and i only slide when i want to.
Also i have a 4 foot snow drift in front of my drive way right now. Think the evo will drive right through it???

Got the car at the beginning of the year and switched to the DSW the very next day! I was still surprised the way OEM tires handles fresh snow and it was way better then what I expected. DSW are just good enough for what I need them to do! Basically, here in NE (Boston area) we do get quite some snow all the time (not as much as some other parts, but still enough), but there are way more days without the snow on the road then with it! So, going to the full blown winters would just sacrifice too much of the good thing for most of the days during the winter! For those snowy days, you just take it easy by not doing anything crazy and it will get you through the day! The next day the snow is gone from the highways anyway, so you are back to your normal driving and joy.
Even though we had more snow then usually so far this winter, I still didn't miss better winter tires. That might be due to the fact that DSW where brand new and compared to the friends MR, I couldn't see that much difference compared to his super duty snows. Possible, the next winter difference will be easier to spot, but for this one there was definitely no reason to get dedicated snows in my case.
Plus, it beats having to buy extra set of rims and dealing with pressure monitoring sensors, then an extra swap and permanent storage of 4 extra wheels. For the summer, they will be definitely slower then the super dry tires that are around, but I am not planing to race on street tires and for attacking on and off-ramps, these could get me arrested just as well as better summer tires. If you are so dedicated for racing then get race wheels and tires and leave the street setup intact! But, this is what works for me and I hope you will find your best position regarding the tire choices.
