Why only 9.5 or 10.5 width on rims? Please help

I'm buying my dream wheels, Volk TE37SL but I'm wondering why I only see people run 9.5 or 10.5 width. 9.5 seems too small and 10.5 is frowned upon by the serious track/suspension peeps. Plus, 10.5 needs fender rolling and I really dont want my first try to be on my X.
So I looked into it and found a set of 18x10 SL's and it sounds like the perfect size. The offset is something crazy like 30 I think.
But how come I dont see or hear of anyone else going with that size?
I tried to comment on other threads but it wont let me for some reason

I take a few weeks off and nothing has changed.

Choose your tires (and tell us what they will be) and then ... as in AFTER ... choose the wheels to make the tires happy. So, what tires?

Havent decided on tires yet. I was recommended Yokohama S Drives but then a friend of mine said those sucked. I want performance so Im really not into stretching. I never knew rims and tires could have so many different options until actually buying for performance and not just looks.

What are you doing with these tires?
For daily driving even 9.5 is more than wide enough.
For autocross what class will you be in?
For road racing you'd know what tires you want already...

80% daily driving 20% track. I just hate buying something and then wishing I had gone all the way with it. I live in Europe and the roads here are much better than the states. No stop lights or stop signs so I drive everywhere like a maniac.
Other than clearing the suspension, is there a such thing as "too wide"? Forza says the wider the tire = the better the grip, lol. Thats all I got so far.

Dude, all I have so far is the wheel size. My thread is asking for advice and information from people who know what they are talking about. I'm asking why the common size WHEEL is either 9.5 or 10.5.
If someone has a daily with 10.5 and they did little or no fender rolling then I'm all ears on the size tire they went with.

who told you the 10.5 is frowned upon? Why the hell does Ryan Gates, AMS and others use a 10.5 inch wheel?

Oh and even if you run the 18x9.5 +22 you'll still need to roll in the rear, no way around that.

I'm going with a suspension company (rather not say who so I can avoid an entirely different discussion) and they said 10.5 is over kill. Ryan and AMS have amazing cars and I didnt look into their specs.
Didnt know you should roll with just an 18x9.5. Guess thats where the tires size comes into play. I've read that one guy had to do "aggressive fender rolling" with 10.5 while another said he didnt do any.

I just wanna go back to my basic question since some people seem annoyed at my noob status.
Question: Is there a reason people prefer 9.5 and 10.5 over just 10 width? 18x10 seems a little harder to find, is that why?

nope. I run 9.5's with a 20 offset and no need to roll.

Alright back to what everyone is trying to tell you and you're missing the point:

You don't pick a wheel then find tires to fit it. You pick tires you'd like to run, then appropriately size your wheel. If you'd like 255/40 tires for example, 9.5 is perfect, rolling depends on offset and brand of tire. If you want 305 tires, then 11 is perfect and you'll have to roll/pull etc regardless of offset. You don't choose the wheel first is what all the smart people are trying to tell you.

I get what you're saying but with so many choices it doesn't really matter to me. I just want the widest wheel possible without having to fender roll. So whatever tire matches that then that's what I'll go with.
So if I have an 18x10 wheel with 30 offset, what size tire will I need to not need fender rolling?

You'll probably need a 235 or 245 and ridiculous camber for any 18x10 to not rub at all. Both of those sizes are improper on an 18x10.
