Winter Tires

I was originally going to buy a winter setup, but right now figured I would just buy some tires for my X, swap them out on the stock GSR wheels......and then next year buy some BBS wheels for the summer tires. How are you doing.

looking at stock sizes of 245/40R18 right now

Any experience on which to go with? I am leaning towards the WS70.....

Blizzak LM-60
Dunlop Winter Maxx
Blizzak WS70
Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3

If you really need winters, Blizzaks are awesome... had them on my Saabs. I use Conti Extreme Contacts on my Evo all year round. The silica-based compound is all you really need.

I am running the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3 and I like them very much.

My reading had both of the Blizzaks as ever so slightly better snow performers, but terrible (relatively) on dry roads. The Alpin PA3 had a much better dry road performance (which less face it 80% of the winter is), so that sold me.

Def get dedicated snows, you won't regret it.

I'm debating ice & snow vs. performance snow category a bit though. As tkromer said though, a lot of cold weather/winter driving is done on dry roads, so maybe performance winter is better?

Also, we've had good experience with my wife's Si on Blizzaks, but I hear their special tread compound only lasts half of the tire life? After that it's just like any other all-season? Is this true?

So maybe leaning towards Michelin at this point, rebates are better on Blizzaks though through tirerack right now.

Who can help me decide?

Very happy with my Blizzaks, might try Nokian Hakkas for my next set. I don't think you can go wrong with either of the Michelin, B-stone or Nokian offerings.

The Winter Maxx and WS70's are best tire for worst snow conditions you'll see. Heavier snow climates you would want to use those. The Michelin and LM-60 work well in plowed areas where you trade some snow/ice traction for better clear road handling.

Personally I always want more snow tire that I'll probably need. I'll trade some handling and wear to make sure I have what it takes to get home at night after work. Thus, the Blizzak WS70 has been my tire of choice. Those with AWD and you should get a Spiderman license place cause you'll be climbing walls.

I had Blizzaks prior forget the model and they were fine.

I run the General AltiMAX Arctic's now I like them better.

Snowy fields, dirt roads, deep snow, plowed off roads. They just grip and grip

I run Achilles winter 101's in the winter. They are cheap and grip is outstanding in the snow. I've ran blizzaks but prefer the Achilles. Only problem is the widest size they sell is a 225, but that should be fine on stock X wheels

Narrower is better in the snow, so max width being 225 isn't a problem.

Winter Rubber

I currently have a set of Hankook Ice Bear tires mounted on a set of factory EVO rims for winter driving. These tires are very good in the snow and rain. I weekly travel through a mountain pass that gets more than its fair share of snow in the winter and these tire have not given me a problem. I do think that this will be my last winter on these tires because no matter how good winter tires work tread depth is the most important factor.

We are using Dunlop Winter Sport M3 on our Mazdaspeed and these tires also work well in the snow. Since the Dunlops are easier to get than the Ice Bears, I will probably switch to them for the EVO next winter.

I just got some Michelin Xi3's for the winter because I got a good deal on them. Reviews seemed to be on par with the Blizzaks. Bring on the snow!!

Ended up getting Blizzak WS70's. Got new Evo Saturday, tires hopefully Tuesday.

All the stock characteristics of my new 2013 GSR are better than my modded 2012 Mustang GT.

Can't wait for the snow!
