Question Dumb question on rotors

My husband said i needed new brake pads for my evo x but didnt have time to put them on before he had to go back to fl. i had to go to the dealership to have a recall piece fixed so i asked them how much it would be for them to put them on for me. they told me that i don't need brake pads i need rotors... i asked if they can be turned cause b4 my husband told me they could be turned once and they said no... im sorry but i only have 18,000 miles on my car and don't brake alot so its hard for me to think that they already need to be replaced. i don't know if the dealership was trying to screw me cause im a female or if i actually need them. my husband cant help because hes in fl and im in Washington state.

what do i actually need too look for to find out if i need them or not??? trying to learn more about my car.

Dont go to the dealership..
I dont see why you couldn't turn the rotors.
Get a second opinion from a reputable shop

I find it hard to believe that you would need rotors. Take it to a local mechanic and have them measure the thickness of the rotors and then post it on here and that will give us an idea of what you're working with. I'm still on the stock rotors and have 68k miles. Yes, they are going to need replaced in the near future but with 18,000 miles and you said you don't brake hard, I find it hard to believe you need new ones. For the mean time, check for hot spots on the rotors and tiny cracks.

I agree, something is fishy. That said, if you do need new rotors also install new brake pads and break them in together.

Yea i guess they were thinking i would be like most people to say ok ...heres 371.00, and also give me a new air filter since your gunna say i need that too along with a bunch of other stuff lol before actually looking into it . im going to call the dude that was handling everything tomorrow and act like a dumb female to see how much i had left. but i do recall him stating they were good though.

now another dumb question .... brakes is just something i havnt learned yet i can do oil changes and other stuff on my own..... do they actually need to take my tire off to see the condition of both

Well, you should take the wheels off to get a proper look, and to see how much there's left of the brake pads. They didn't take the wheels off?

Please note that the thread-starter has an MR. Many shops have the equipment needed to turn a one-piece rotor, but don't have the equipment needed to turn a two-piece rotor. Said shops often say that it can't be done, when the more accurate statement is that they can't do it.

Upshot, if the rotors need to be turned, call around to find a shop that can work on two-piece rotors. You need to ask before you go or you may end up wasting a lot of time.

You can do your own brake pads and rotors too, when it's time. It's not hard at all.
