A small difference in diameter from wear won't hurt much if all you're worried about are diffs spinning etc. How much of a discrepancy of rotation from side to side do you think occurs when driving on canted and crested roads? You'll likely be fine with a lightly used similar tire. Don't shave a god damn snow tire for christ's sake!
