'95 CC Coupe: 4G93-T Swap
'95 CC Coupe: 4G93-T Swap
I've posted this in the Australian forums but thought that maybe some international help wouldn't go astray so here goes...
I'm chasing as much info as I can about putting a 4G93-T (Mitsubishi Lancer GSR) engine into my '95 CC model GLXi Lancer (Mirage) Coupe... phew what a mouthful- did you get all that?!
ie remove the 4G93, replace it with a 4G93-T.
I have the pre-CE shape where the gearbox is on the opposite side, the same as the '92 - '95 US Eagle Summit from what I can work out. I particularly want to hear from people that have actually done this conversion and know what they are talking about as I will be doing the swap over the next couple of weeks. I need to know...
Does it drop straight in?
Does it use the same engine mounts?
Does anything have to be moved / fabricated?
Is the gearbox holding up okay?
What did you do to the clutch?
Can you still use the aircon?
Did you modify / re-route the intercooler and pipework?
Did you modify the brakes? Are you using discs on the rear?
Any police / licensing hassles?
Any potential pitfalls / hassles that I should know about?
and most importantly... what times are you pulling? Is the wheelspin controllable?!
I also have a 4G63-T available but I've heard these are a ***** to fit and they are pretty much undriveable. It's actually cheaper than the GSR engine but I need to know if it's worth the extra hassles like getting a new bonnet and changing the engine mounts.
Any advice, hints and tips would be very much appreciated as I'm currently car-less - my Lancer finally shat itself after 300000km of insanely hard driving
Cheers, hope someone can help

This is prob a stupid question but, if both engines are the 4g93, then why dont you just find a turbo from the 4g93-T and put it on your 4g93 instead of swapping the whole engine?
Just curious, but anywhoo... more power to ya

Because the 4G93-T has some slight differences like twin cams, lower compression pistons and oil-cooling grooves in the block, and I'd have to custom fabricate a turbo manifold. Also, my engine has done 300000km and the head is now cracked, so bolting a turbo on is probably not going to make it run a whole lot better
I can get a front-cut 150kw Jap import twin cam engine with low mileage that is made for a turbo and also comes with a computer, wiring loom, bigger disc brakes, intercooler and so on for roughly the same price as it would cost me to get my 90kw single cam running again.

Hmm.. have you try these sites:
1. http://www.crockenbergmotors.com.au/conversions.html
2. http://users.chariot.net.au/~brettl/default.htm
3. http://www.vysor.com/lancerproject.htm
Hope these could help you.

Thanks for the info. I went and saw Mal Crockenberg the other day, the 1.8 (4G93-T) remains my best option but they are pretty hard to find. The 2L (4G63-T) is easier to get hold of but much harder to fit. It involves getting a new custom bonnet and bumper, dropping the engine a few cm lower on the engine mounts and getting custom intercooler piping. I'd also have to change the rear brakes to discs in order to get it licensed as I'm going up in engine capacity, which adds another couple of thou' to the install. All up I'd be looking at about $8000 for the VR4 (4G63-T) conversion, whereas the GSR (4G93-T) would (hopefully) be a bolt in swap.
Unfortunately I can't find any info on GSR conversions as these engines weren't available in the US so not many people have done it
