Keep Srt-4 or get EVO?
Hey guys, I'm about to go TDY and will be coming back with around 6 grand. My SRT-4 only has motor mounts, STS, and BOV W/hard pipe. Easy to go back to stock and should be fairly easy to sell for $15,000. I know I can get a used 03 EVO for low 20's so that's not a problem. I will eventually move back to pittsburgh, and my SRT sucks in the snow. I also hate the traction issues in rain or when launching. I posted the same thread in srtforums but everyone kept saying that evo's are unreliable and go through clutches like crazy. I'd like the input of some evo guys though. Thanks-Shawn

Well, ask the lamborghini guys and they'll say ferrari's are unrealiable. I say go for what YOU want. To be honest I think the evo is a better platform for all types of racing and has just as big of an aftermarket. The reason people say evo's eat through clutches like crazy is because rivals find the retards that do 7k clutch dumps and get a 14.5 at 100 and complain about the evo being slow because they cant drive. I have a few low 12 second G-tech runs on my clutch, which is stock with 12k miles on it. Honestly, evos are only as unrealiable as their driver's ability to make responsible decisions, its a ratio, find yours and you'll be happy with the car.
fwd vs awd ...hmmmm
i went from fwd to awd...couldn't be happier...
like all cars...it's how you drive it and maintain it. I don't launch all the time just causei got awd...i dont wanna fork out hte cash for a clutch now...kwman is right...too many 7k dumpers out there giving average drivers a bad name. I'm sure there are plenty srt clutches that go out prematurely...was it a bad clutch or a bad driver?

If you were somewhere with no snow I'd probably say to save yourself the hassle and stick with the SRT-4 and put some money into that, but being in north dakota I'd definitely recommend the EVO. The EVO is a superior car in pretty much every aspect. Just make sure you take into consideration the cost of upkeep. Im assuming the insurance would be very similiar, but the cost of replacing brake pads, oil changes and such on the EVO is not cheap.
Do you know anyone with an evo? If so, see if you can take it for a spin, or test drive one from a dealership (if they will let you).
I think once you get behind the wheel you'll have answered the question for yourself.

My personal feeling is that evo appear unreliable becasue an awd platform does not stand up to 7k rpm clutch dumps with a motor producing close to 300 ft lbs of torque in stock trim. FWD is easier on clutches because the tires spin.
Now, I will admit that the evo is a mitsubishi, and admittedly mitsu is not great on quality in general, but be that as it may, I also agree that problems seem to be in proportion to abuse. So unless you have a lemon, if you take care of the car, it will take care of you.
And cost of ownership is not going to be any more expensive than other high performance cars with expensive tires, brakes, etc.
I think if you want an evo, and you feel like you can afford it, then get one.

-With the EVO you get all weather performance (AWD)
-Quicker than a SRT-4
-Faster? Stock for stock it's pretty close, a SRT-4 should pull up top, but the EVO has the higher top speed so eventually the SRT-4 will be pulled in
-More potential in the EVO. Don't get me wrong the SRT-4 has plenty of potential and is easy and cheap to mod, but $2,000 is enough money to turn an EVO into a low to mid 12 Second Cobra killer. Just look at my sig, and graze our forums and while I give props to the SRT-4 boys for making more power these days, still way behind. Three or Four, actually I think five EVOs are on the verge of 9s as I type right now (ISP Racing, AMS Racing, some guy with a supercharger and turbocharger set up, Curt Brown, and a possible 800WHP EVO driven buy a customer of Switzer). There are a couple of guys (one of the guys use to own a SRT-4) on the verge of hitting 11s with no cams or flash, the people that say it's impossible are probably the same one's that told Curt Brown that the EVO can't hit 10s on the stock turbo. What's next 500AWHP on the STOCK TURBO (people are getting closer than you would expect). Sorry just a lot to say.
-Overall a better performance machine, nothing new under $50,000 can match the EVOs all around performance, NOTHING (ok except a Lotus Elise
).-I mean your coming from a SRT-4, so it's pretty much as far as interior wise and daily driving not that much of a difference. But there are people who have come from Corvettes, M3s, S4s, R32s, and Porsches and all traded in their cars for EVOs (or bought EVOs as a second or third car). The EVO cannot compare to those cars when it comes to day to day driving, but the people still love the EVO for what it is, a great porfmance car and bargain.
-I'm not gonna say the EVOs reliability is the best, but it's not as bad as I'm sure the srtforums made it out to be. You take care of the car and the car should take care of you.
By the way all those 9 second EVOs can be street driven. The EVO is a true street gladiator.
