NEWBIE.....just bought a EVO VIII questions here

still learning how to drive a manual but not a master at it yet...couple of questions.

1. what is the correct way to get into gear from a complete stop?
- clutch all the way down
- shift into 1st
- hold clutch, then release it very slowly to the friction point, pause a little bit and then give a little gas and release clutch the rest of the way slowly?
or
- clutch all the way down
- shift into 1st
- hold clutch, then release it very slowly to the friction point and without stopping clutch movement give a little gas and release the clutch the rest of the way?

2. whats the proper way to downshift?
- say your in 3rd gear and want to goto 2nd, let rpm go down a little bit then clutch in and downshift? or hold the rpm at the current gear and just downshift?

3. from a complete stop is it ok to keep the car in 1st gear? or will that minimize the clutch life?

1. Somewhere in between that, you will eventually know the friction point of your car and as you are releasing the clutch you give it a little throttle. It is possible to move the car withour pressing the gas, and it is also possible to move the car while flooring the gas. You want to learn somewhere between there, preferrably trying to move the car with as little throttle as possible.

2. When downshifting, use your brakes first to slow you down, dont use the transmission to slow the car down. Once you are at the right rpm, lets say the engin is starting to bog down or right before that ( you will know after a few times) then clutch all the way in, shift to the lower gear and slowly release the clutch. If you are at the right rpm then the car should not shake or move.

3. Yes it is ok to leave the car in 1st gear, just make sure the clutch is fully depressed

Just try to drive smoothly, dont try to launch the car or be speed racer for hte first few weeks. When shifting you dont want to upset the balance of your car, so dont launch the car and trasfer the weight to the rear, when downshifting dont make the car start to shake. Once you get used to just making the car run smoothly then you can learn more advanced techniques and techniques on how to drive faster.

Imagine you are driving a limo, so it has to be smooth and quiet. Just remember to use as little throttle as possible to move the car and at the same time dont make the car shake because the engine is about to die.

Heres a great way to learn where your clutch "catches." Find a local mountain.. Find a nice good slope about 30 degrees going down. Drive up the slope..... make sure no one's around....practice goin into first about 200 times.... after you practice on a slope... flat ground feels like cake. Plus you have the added incentive that if you stall out and someone else pulls up behind you....... well lets just say you better get that thing in gear.

really though, not to sound harsh, but definately should practice on an easier clutch, i.e. civic, or old pickup truck., besides, it is a hard thing to explain, you need to be taught.

1. I guess since you are new, a little bit of gas everytime will prevent you from stalling off the line, but learn your clutch engagement point and you should be able to get familiarize with it quickly.

2. Since you are a newbie in driving stick, I would suggest learn to go through gears without mis-shift first, by driving cautiously and slowly you shouldn't need to downshift that much, but once you think you get it down...do a search on "Double clutch" and "Downshift"

3. Holding the clutch out will not shorten the clutch's life, but other parts of the clutch assembly that's "separating" the clutch & the flywheel would get more wear & tear if you are holding them apart for too long. I usually put my car in neutral if I know my stop is more than 5 seconds

Congrats and good luck on your EVO, it's an amazing car, but PLEASE get your driving skills down before doing anything...for a lack of better word..."Fast & Furious"...
